Well, apart from some serial numbers having letters AFTER the serial number to determine the bezel style (for example "LV" for "Lunetter Verte", "BLRO" for "Bleu/rouge" and "LN" for "Lunette Noir"), serial numbers tell nothing about what MODEL you have but only tell you the year of manufacture of the watch.

What tell you the MODEL type is the reference number, for example 11610 for the Submariner Date in SS.

Here is a good link explaining the SERIAL number system:

Nearly all watch related things can be easily found in our own
Rolex FAQ or in the Rolex watches and other resourses.Plus this link compiled over many hours by myself. For all members to get
most watch related information some now a bit out of date.

One day on the forum and I learned PLENTY about my tudor chrono automatic. I bought this watch new at Tourneau on Madison Ave. in the mid seventys. I chose it over the Rolex because it was self winding (and a little cheaper). I wore it at sea ever since, including sail boats at sea for ten days at a time, Trawlers from Wasington State thru the panama canal all the way up into the Great Lakes. I thought that the time had come to restore the old lady. It has been serviced by a watch maker older than me, but now it needed more parts than he could find so it went to a swiss guy in Marin County CA. I still need to find a Bezel and maybe a face( a little faded).I will post a picture when I get it back. The model is 79170 I believe.
