For the manual ones.

Can I ask why yes to the Rolli's but no to the AP's?

It's a general question I've been wanting to ask for ages.

Why would I need a winder? So that i don't have to wind the clock manually if i leave it off my wrist for too long?

Is it worth the buy? I have no idea about these things yet but so far i do not use a winder.

You would need a winder if you want to save the hassle to adjust the time on your watch after the power reserve runs out when you're not wearing it.

It is definitely worth it when you own a complicated watch like a perpetual calendar because you wouldn't want the date to go out of sync.

Only for my 5402 as setting the calendar is such a mess even with the quick-advance feature at midnight.

I don't use a winder for AP because the leather strap doesn't seem to fit correctly in my winder. My rolex however fits just fine

Orbita has a great "Rotorwind" technology they use on their winders. This is my preference.

I used to use winders when I had a bigger Rolex collection, but I decided to reduce it down to a fewer, nicer (IMO) watches. Now that my service costs have gone up I've decided to not use winders with the thought that I could go longer in-between service intervals since the parts would be moving less. I have no idea if that logic is sound or if using the crown to wind occasionally puts more wear on the watch than using a winder.

I feel so cheap right now

Is there any info/data on whether winders are good or bad for the movement's longevity? I've heard the two opinions:

-- The consistent movement from the winder avoids lube drying and spares the movement from potentially stressful start-ups or crown stress.

Vs

-- The consistent movement from the winder causes unnecessary wear and tear.

Has anyone come across any real data or research to support either of these views?

Based on watch studies, I'd say both are bunk.

I use a winder as I have a four different automatic watches which saves me the hassle of winding them all up, they're ready to roll anytime I feel like a change of scenery on my wrist!

Mike, you've seen studies out there? If you recall where you might have come across them, please let me know.
