Your thoughts on this Sub 5512
Thinking of throwing down on this nice-looking 1977 Sub 5512 from a very reputable Tokyo vintage dealer. Looks great to me, but could do with the community's expertise... Anybody see any issues with it?
http://bit.ly/14n9A51 Details: Caliber 1570 movement Bracelet 7836 FF280 11 links Price 778,000 yen (approx. 7,780 USD at current exchange rate) Probably higher than US prices, but that's standard for imported vintage in Japan. Thanks all. |

Wow, great patina and very nice insert. For that kind of money, I'd want to see it in person, or at least get better photos of the lugs. You need to see them at an angle to help determine how much polish they've have. Service history? Photos of the movement and inside of the case? Also, that's not a 7836 bracelet. Looks like a 93150 that would have 580 end pieces. On the surface, and based on the photos, looks like a beauty. But I'd want a lot more info/photos if I were in the market. Good luck!

Very nice pics...to show off the patina and 'hue'/tone of the watch.. As 'swish77' mentions..etal ..I'd have to see it in person..
I have seen references to the 7836 and 93150 as being similar... http://www.google.ca/imgres?hl=en&bi...2&tx=173&ty=48 . but being no expert I could say for sure..- It's a great looking Sub, for sure... Good luck....!

Aaron has one of the nicest matte 5512's out there. I would take his advice. To me the dial looks like a very nice mk II maxi version. Good luck.

Thanks! Here's a shot of mine for comparison with the one the OP is looking at. Again, make sure you see the back/inside of the case/movement for any sign of corrosion.

Looks perfect. Love the patina. In a few years that will be the price for one that is not as nice.

I think this is a rail dial 5512. You see how the words line up like my 1665

Thanks so much everyone. I went to see the watch today and it sang to me from the first instant. It's had some sympathetic polishing but still has a nice amount of its original form, and the photos don't do justice to the sheer beauty of the patina and the matte dial.
![]() I had the dealer open up the case to show the movement and the writing inside the caseback, and everything was as it should be with no corrosion. ![]() So I bought it, and managed to haggle a nice discount. The input of the forum has been great in supporting the purchase, for which thanks again to all. ![]() The question is now, which strap to wear it on? Would welcome all your thoughts on this... ![]() (Note: the link to the 5512 in the original post seems to have changed. It's now at http://bit.ly/SKXtpo, but who knows whether the URL will be changed again...) |
