We are going out to Williams, AZ for a few days and will have a little time to do some touristy stuff. Any suggestions for where to stay near Williams if we want to do a day at the Grand Canyon? What else is a 'must do' in that area? Sedona? Scottsdale? Lake Powell?

If you're not gonna stay in Flagstaff (which I would recommend) then think about staying in Tusayan for your time at the Grand Canyon. It's little more than a cluster of hotels and a few restaurants but it's right outside the Park's main gate and is an hour closer than Williams.

There's really not a whole lot going on in Williams.

Maybe we will just stay in Flagstaff...but we do have to be in Williams for a few days for some ranch stuff. So trying to figure out some other stuff we can do while we are there. We will maybe fly out to CA after that for a few more days.

Like some others have said, Sedona's really nice and it's not all that far from Flag or Williams. Personally, I love the Grand Canyon. If you haven't been there before, doing a day hike along one of the rim paths or even venturing down a ways along the Bright Angel is well worth the effort. The views will stay with you for the rest of your life.

One little tip. If you do stay in Flagstaff, stay away from the hotels on the east side, down Route 66. You'll be bothered by train whistle all night down there (personal experience, trust me

). There's a lot of hotels down by the I-40/I-17 interchange. That's the better place to stay.

Oh gosh, that has happened to us before somewhere else. That was a lonnnng night. Needless to say we didn't stay there the next night. Thanks for mentioning that!

If you like historic stuff, the longest contiguous stretch of old Route 66 is a short trip from Williams (just past Ash Fork to be exact) and goes to Kingman. Even if you don't take the full trip, I suggest that you eat at the Snow Cap in Seligman and tour the Grand Canyon Caverns. http://www.gccaverns.com/

Love the ride back 35 years ago when it was all dirt roads.....rode my Yamaha XT500 to Tortilla Flats many a week-end
Its still a nice drive since they paved it...back 35 years ago it was pretty hairy ride...
Its fun to rent a boat or jet ski once you get out there.
Old town Scottsdale is fun to walk around.....but when its 110 not so much.
Plenty of casinos around town if you like to gamble (Phoenix-Scottsdale)
Sedona is pretty much tourist stuff now....but the pink jeep tours or some of hikes are fun.

The Grand Canyon Railway is a good way to get up to the Grand Canyon if you've never been there before. Bearizona is a pretty cool little wildlife park in Williams. Scottsdale is about a 3.5 hour drive south and you will be trading in beautiful weather for a 108 degree convection oven. Lake Powell is also a good drive away and even longer now since a stretch of the highway collapsed a couple months ago. If you get to Flagstaff, you can take a chairlift up the peaks for one hell of a view. Sedona is nice as well but expensive. If you are up for some wine tasting, head down to the Cottonwood/Verde Valley area. There are several wineries and tasting rooms down there. Enjoy. Summer in Northern AZ is very nice.

And for antiques and Indian/cowboy vintage shopping, give Prescott a whirl. It's got an adorable historic downtown district lined with nice shops. Since we love our turquoise, let me especially recommend a funky place called Ogg's Hogan. They are 5th-generation Indian traders. The proprietor actually worked for the Fred Harvey Co. Huuuuuge selection of vintage and contemporary quality Indian jewelry, and he deals.

Prescott was AZ's old territorial capital, I think twice. You can do a nice loop from PHX to Prescott, then Sedona, then on to Flag.

There are many good ruins sites up in that area of AZ, too.

Did a similar trip myself last year. I found the following things to be different from one another and allowed me to see many areas of AZ:
-Tour of Montezuma Castle and Natl Park in Camp Verde
-Arizona Snowbowl (mountain) hiking in Flagstaff
-Tour of Glen Canyon Dam and Lake Powell in Page
-Smooth River rafting on Colorado R.
-Pink Jeep tour of Red Rocks in Sedona

Okay everyone else can fill you on on sites and activities, but lemme continue the shopping chat.

In Sedona, the best jewelry, rugs, pottery, and kachina dolls are at:

Garland's Rugs (also sells pottery, kachinas, and a little jewelry), but famed for being one of the best rug collections in the SW

Garland's Jewelry (mind-boggling selection, ranges to very high end)

Hoel's Indian Shop (small but outstandingly curated)

There's also a beautiful Hopi shop on 2nd floor above Garland's Rugs, can't remember the name but fine quality Hopi silver jewelry.
