Need help on my GMT Master 1675

Dear all,

I'm new in this forum...my name is Nicolas and I am from Chile. Few weeks ago I found a GMT Master 1675 in my father in law's house. Looking in the internet I have found that should be from years 1957 or 1958...I'm just learning about it!!! Serial is 504318 (at 6 o'clock) and says 1675 Registered (at 12 o'clock). Will attach some photos for you to see the catastrophic shape of this GMT. I need help on find some parts to restore it!!! Thanks for your time and help!!!!

PS: The bracelet was replaced many years ago for a 2 dollars one!!! What a crime!!!

Looks like an early 1960's PCG (pointed crown guard). What parts did you need? As I look at the photos, it appears everything is there and the value of the vintage watches is in having their original dials, hands bezels etc. The dial and hands appear to be radium which Rolex used before Rolex switched to tritium.

Be careful about replacing the original parts that are there or it could adversely affect the value of the watch. While the dial and hands look old, weathered and in need of replacement, many collectors like that look.

Replace the crystal and service the movement, don't brush or polish it and keep the dial and hands!

You need only a new crystal and, of course, the movement needs to be serviced. The crown looks to be really worn, so probably you will have to replace it also.

Do some research for a vintage specialist (Bob Ridley is the only name I know) because if you send it to Rolex they will probably replace some parts, basically ruining the watch.

A distressed leather strap will be a nice addition to the watch, IMHO.

Don't touch anything until you have all the information

on that watch. It looks all original and as said, a service and crystal along with a bracelet or nato strap is all you may need.
there should be some competent watchmakers somewhere in your area. Just post asking for some opinions and guidance. A great find imho. M

Have it serviced locally. There really isn't a need to send it out of the country for a service and to replace a crystal or winding crown. The shipping expenses would add substantially to the repair and a Bob Ridley service is very, very expensive.

I'm sure there are plenty of competent watch makers in Chile.

Just the way I like to find them.nice early PCG Gmt.looks like the crystal was bad for a long time as the dial got moisture on it.FInd a local watchmaker and give him instructions not to touch clean etc the dial service the movement, new seals and a crystal. That one still has the crystal retaining ring gasket.MOst are missing this so make sure you keep it.

Thanks a lot forr all advices...I really appreciate them!!!! I already bought a new crystal...and found this site that offer a new dial (I will not buy it...is just an idea)..I have experience restoring cars but not with watches... when you restore a car the value is increased. In this case I want to have a nice watch that can be really an impacting beauty...by the meantime I will keep it like it is now and will send to a local service. Please give me some places were I can buy a genuine bracelet for this GMT or a genuine strap for it!!! Thanks again to all of you!!!

Cheers,

Period correct? Ebay or VRM. Be prepared to spend USD 1000+.

1960-61 IMHO. The correct bracelet can be a few actually. A Rivet oyster (expandable or fixed)or a jubilee bracelet. They were made in more than 1 country so there is a few different styles. The nicest imho is a swiss expandable rivet.
Here is mine

Beautiful watch Nikos, but I have to ask if the expandable bracelet pinches the wrist hairs.

Crown seems a replacement and needs to be swapped. Dial is moisture damaged. However, DO NOT touch anything. Just replace the crystal and service the movement, and maybe replace the crown.

The watch is not in pristine condition, but it has character. Trying to restore it to its original state (period correct dial, hands and insert in particular) would neither be cheap nor easy, and then it would not be "your watch". I'd not do it.

Sourcing a period-correct original bracelet will not be cheap. Either rivet oyster (a few versions here, US- made or Swiss made), or a folded 7836 might fit the bill. Preference is clearly the rivet oyster, and it's the most expensive by far. You will also need the correct end links. The 280 I think.

I'd wear it on a NATO. Cheap and in style. It's been a long time my 1675 is not in its rivet bracelet, and I love 1675 gilts on NATOS. Personal preference, though.

Disfruta de tu reloj. Es muy bonito.

Tsk, tsk, tsk. You are in the wrong place to discuss anything with the R-word. We'll help you with anything genuine, but help will lose all speed on anything else.
