~ I finally bought a Rolex Sub :0) ~
Hello Rolex Forums,
Well I finally bought myself a Rolex Submariner; down under here in Australia. It’s an “W” Serial with a Tritium Dial, Hands and Pearl of course. It’s keeping time well within the COSC specifications and the 3135 is clean as a whistle. I’m really looking forward to seeing how this one comes up after its first service. Best I could do with the camera phone. I’ve been lurking here for some months and it’s great to see a supportive community that is as crazy about watches as I am. Cheers |

Welcome Goldwright
Australia is a big place l wonder where you are from? Anyway a full Rolex service will see your Submariner return to as good as new. One thing for you to consider is whether you might wish to keep the original dial, hands and pearl. Rolex might suggest you replace those items if they do not glow in the dark anymore. As you probably know they use luminova these days. Anyway, it is just something for you to consider.

Welcome to TRF I love the Sub.
I don't know if it's your first Rolex or not, but it 's a great one to have. Don't be confused by what has been said. It's a great Rolex to have period. It isn't a starter Rolex as may have been conveyed. Enjoy it in good health

Thanks guys for the warm and friendly welcome.
I’ve been wearing dive style watches for most of my life; it’s nice to now own the original. @ Lol-x, Where do I live in Australia, well I’ll give you a hint to see if the situation here has gone global yet. Yeasterday my little town got totally pounded by over 2 feet (600mm) of rain in less than 12 hours. Hundreds of homes and business’ flooded, cars up to their roof in water, damage expected to run into the multiple millions and the place declared a disaster zone. Sub still ticking away nicely. I must admit I am tempted to change the hands and the bezel at the service. I know the general consensus is to leave it totally original for the retention of value. I really like to be able to read the time in the dark though, so I guess a compromise is to get them changed and make sure I retain the hands and bezel for the future. Having said that though, I can actually still just manage to read the hands, dial and pearl in the dark (even after 12 years) but my eyes have to be fully adjusted to the dark to make it out. The pearl however has a lovely light patina and I like the thought that watch is the same now as the day it rolled out of Rolex. @ Terry Newton, ha we’re just a little wet down here atm. Your comment on the Subs ‘Tool Watch’ status is a real attraction to me. I’m a practical guy and I just love how rugged these things are. I just chuckle when I accidentally scrape the case against a wall and think “Wall, you're going to have to harden up a bit if you want to make an impression on this thing.” In general I honestly feel the design of the Subs, Sea Dwellers, GMT’s, Yacht Masters and Explorers really carry a strong sense of masculinity; something that in some ways is being lost in our modern age. As you can see I’m not afraid of the keyboard. Thanks again guys the warm welcome. |

Well I guess you are from New South Wales.
I know Rolex will not let you keep the original dial and hands if you get a replacement. I understand how you feel, it is really good to be able to see the time in the dark.

Thanks again guys.
@ Lol-x…Not quite, it's the State of Queensland. And I'm going to have to think about it. If I can't retain the hands and bezel, I will leave the Sub totally original. Meanwhile, I spent some time with the old camera phone and took a reasonably good shot of my Sub on a G9 NATO. It makes me smile...~ My Sub on NATO :0) ~ |

Sub was my first everyday rolex as well I just love it but I will tell you that these guys will really make you want more in no time. I am no searching for a GMT, but nothing will make me leave my sub behind. Great looking watch.
Looks like yours is probably the same year as mine. Mine is an "A" series from 1998 the hands etc don't really glow anymore on it either. I've thought about changing them out but can't decide. I did notice that if I hold it under a light for a short period and then go into a dark room it will glow for a few minutes but not like it should. Maybe I'll leave this one alone and just get a seccond. I'm telling you they are adiciting. Nathan |

Yours is close...mine is a 1995 'W' Serial. I can just manage to read my tritium hands in the dead of night after my eyes have adjusted. I'll try the light trick and see what happens, though I don't understand how that would work. I'm currently leaning towards not touching it at all at the service. I guess if it’s ever critical that I see the time in the dark, I'll wear my Omega 2254.50.00. That things got enough lume to light a path in front of you. |

BAAAAAAHahahahah, so I'm guessing JJ ‘the swarthy New Zulander’ can take a joke then?
The last time I was on the South Island, the Christ Church Airport announcements went something like this..."Due to Volcanic activity on the North Island the following flights have been cancelled..." (true story) |
