Good idea on adding it to my insurance. Any ideas what value I should put on it? There don't seem to be many on eBay or Chrono24 and the prices are all over the map. |

Just take a bunch of photos of it, and get some help from others who have insurance.

Unfortunately, its been my experience that your insurance company will ask for an appraisal from a qualified source and that will probably cost you. I am not sure that RSC or an AD would/could attempt to appraise it because of age and rarity - but I could be wrong. That said, even an independent appraiser probably won't give you much of a boost in value based on the fact that it was your father's and that it has significant sentimental value to you - probably just its fair market value. But thats life - better insured than not! Good Luck! |

congrats and bob is the best of the best! what a beautiful looking 5508 JB you have!
quick question for you, I notice there is some rust or corrosion on the crystal retaining ring.. I can see it through the edges of the crystal. Did bob mention that he stabilized that or did he attempt to clean it? Just want to make sure it doesn't get any worse in the future. |

Absolutely gorgeous sub. Congrats my friend. Your very lucky to have such a great memory of your dad. I noticed in the second to last picture at the top of the insert looks like some rust or corrosion. I had the same thing removed off my red.

Kevin, I asked the same thing 3 posts up. I'm surprised bob did not clean it or im thinking the retaining ring was too far corroded to clean off and wondering if he stabilized it? He had to of seen it because he installed a new crystal.

Crap I'm sorry. When I'm on my phone I have a habit of skipping post. There has to be a reason why he left it because it's usually something that's easily removed on 1680s. But maybe that model is different. |

The rust that we are seeing on this 5508 is the inner walls of the crystal retaining ring. At some point, water got in between the walls of the crystal and crystal ring which caused this rust.. Now the only difference between a retaining ring on a 1680 and that on a 5508 is a 5508 crystal retaining ring is much much thinner compared to 1680's ring. I have purchased from bob in the past a retaining ring for my 5508 but it ran me 1500 for NOS ring.. That part is no longer made by rolex so pre owned or NOS would need to be sourced. Just like Rolex no longer makes coined flat edge bezels for the 5508 (brass nickel plated OR steel service bezel) and if Rolex replaced the bezel or Ring on a 5508, it would get a 1680 style bezel and retaining ring as 1680 retaining rings will not fit a 5508 bezel.. To save money, You could go with an aftermarket 5508 retaining ring. I don't recommend it, but it will do the job.. Won't fit perfect, may need some polishing to get them to work properly.. Aftermarket Rings cost around $150 But would only do this if you could not find an original.. IMO it's better to have an aftermarket retaining ring then to have an updated bezel and retaining ring.. This way, you can preserve the look of the 5508. But IMO 5508 retaining rings have to be cracked or badly stretched before they would need replacing.. a little Rust would not be a reason to replace. The main problem I can see bob would have had is, Since the 5508 retaining ring is so thin and it is responsible for keeping the crystal sealed to the watch case, He cannot sand or polish the inner ring walls because that would remove metal and the ring would no longer hold a pressure fit around the crystal. It is all about even pressure with the ring. He would need to soak it in a rust eliminator.. It is possible he did the best he could without replacing the entire ring. But I still think from the pics it could have been cleaned much better. Because normally when cleaned correctly, rust color and spots are gone, but pitting from the rust are still visible without the rust color. I would contact bob about this because as long as you still see rust color, it is still eating its way through the metal. here is a 5508 crystal retaining ring compared to a 1680 retaining ring |

Thanks for the detailed explanation, Subking. I'll ask Bob about it.
It seems to me he mentioned something about the retaining ring but said it wasn't anything to be worried about. I assumed it was the gasket/washer-type thing as shown here: |

the 5508 does not use a bezel pressure ring to hold it self down onto a retaining ring.. A 5508 bezel uses a bent spring wire that fits on the inside of the bezel itself, if that makes any sense to you. As long as you don't see any rust, then you are ok for the long term, but your ring should not look like that for sure. pits are ok to a certain extent, but rust isn't. Once the rust is cleaned off the ring, under a loop you can see the amount of metal it has eaten through if any at all. hope this helps. let him know the guys on TRF pointed it out, that way he will know it has had a second and 3rd opinion etc. I have personally owned and worked on a few 5508s 6536's etc so I am pretty confident with the info I am giving you. Otherwise I would have never of brought it up. let us know what he says.. send him the pictures you posted here so he can see. |

5508 Crystal Retaining Ring
I just looked at the forum pictures provided by Don. Aside from how well his watch responded during the service, I see what appears to be fresh rust on the crystal retainer ring.
Don and I did speak about the merits of my adding a nos 5508 ring and concluded with leaving things as is since the ring will secure the bezel and that the watch would not be around water. Even though his ring was "cleaned" there appears to have been some moisture along the way that's currently oxidizing. I'm glad to have see these pictures now and will follow up with Don. |
