1655 Exp II Frog Foot Coronet

A gentleman walks into the workplace yesterday and ask for a simple ring clean/polish. I oblige and hand the ring over to our jeweler to do the job. While he was waiting, I noticed his 214270 Exp I and complemented him on it. (At this point I'm pretty excited to speak to someone about Rolex watches!!)

He asks if I owned one and I replied yes and showed him what I had on. Before I could even get the next word out, he shook his head as though he was in disgust and said, "I am a huge collector of Rolex watches and have NEVER seen such a bad FAKE!"

I was taken aback by his comment and asked why he thought mine was not genuine. He said that the Rolex Crown on the dial gave it away and that I ought to be ashamed of myself for flaunting a replica. I just smiled warmly and said "I'm sorry you feel that way."

So then comes the awkward silence.....for the next 3 minutes..... The jeweler finally brings out and returns the shiny clean ring. The gentleman thanks him and turns to me and say, "Kid, I'm sorry if I was harsh but if you want a Rolex save your hard earned money and buy a real one instead of that crap from China." I kindly nodded and he walked out whilst shaking his head.......

This post is not meant to bash anyone and of course I do not think ill of the misinformed gentleman nor hold any grudge whatsoever. I just wanted to share my story. In the meantime, here is a pic of the frog footed freccione.

Guess he wasn't as huge a collector as he thought he was

I'd have told him - no argument, just put him straight. And maybe suggest he learns some manners as well.

Also bear in mind the similar

"Do not argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience"

Last year I brought one of my 5513's from '67 to the AD to have some gaskets replaced. The salesperson looked at it with a puzzled look on her face. I asked if there was a problem. She said she needed to make sure it was real.

He's an idiot but where I'd have put the brakes on was when he called you "kid".

I've had several instances where someone has called me "kid" or condescendingly "young man". I nip that in the bud fast, especially in situations where I'm a customer. My usual response is "that's Mr. Joe100 or sir, not xxx".

This is all too true when it comes to connoisseur hobbies like vintage watches, wines, cigars, cars, etc. I'm certainly no vintage Rolex expert, but I know enough to know I have a lot to learn.

Great quote but i surely would of set him straight. I would NEVER tolerate that kind of disrespect. I would of enjoyed giving him a short lesson in front of everybody.
