6263 Service

New to the forum. I have enjoyed the members post for sometime. Well after 43 years ('71-'84 on my Dad's wrist, '84-'14 on mine), my 6263 has died. Crown will not advance in winding position. Time adjustment still works. I have read mixed opinions about sending it back to Rolex. Some say they will/won't work on it. I also don't want to get a highly polished, non vintage, looking watch back. Any suggestions on who has a good reputation, preferably in the Southwest or Westcoast, for servicing these? Sounds weird, but I'm really missing my daily companion. Any suggestions would be welcome. Thanks.

I don't think I need to tell you how much this beauty is worth - great early 6263. I would also recommend ABC Watchwerks (LA) - they have a stella reputation and can service the movement. When was it last serviced?

Beautiful watch!!

Your closest to ABC, but Bob Ridley is also a good option. He just serviced my similar vintage 6262 and did an outstanding job.

Wish my dad had your dads taste for watches back in the early 70s!.

I ended up with a two-tone DD. Its special...but its no 6263!

Very cool.

A two-tone DD? If so you have the only one and it might be worth more than any 6263

I assume you meant DJ.

Thank you all for the comments. Looks like I'll be making a road trip to L.A. after the holidays. Michael, I'm embarrassed to say I had the watch serviced by Rolex back in '91. It was 20 years old at the time and in running condition. Apparently 23 years was pushing the limits. Thanks again for all your replies about ABC, I'll post some picks when I get it back.

Send via Registered Mail insured fully or by other means only if insurance is available. There have been too many horror stories lately of watches lost in transit, so protect yourself. FWIW, Fed Ex does not insure jewelry. Not sure about UPS, but I haven't heard of watch people using them.

Great early screwdown Daytona! Make sure not pushers and bezel get changed.

Welcome to the forum Ralph!

That's a great watch, and there is nothing silly at all about missing your daily companion.

Cant wait to see it fixed up!

Hey Ralph, that is beautiful! As far as service, I can't say enough about Rikki. Last year I sent him a 45 year old seiko, nothing special, but sentimental value was priceless. Came back looking and running like new. He just did a full service on my omega seamaster with the same results!! Besides being a "TOP NOTCH" watchmaker, he's a GREAT GUY!!

Great advice about the mail. Six hour drive for me to ABC. I'll do the road trip, would like to meet these guys. Pick it up in a few weeks. If I get pulled over crossing the desert, on the way home, I can explain to the cop I needed to verify the accuracy of the tachymeter. Thanks again guys.

Ok, took many of your recomadations and took the road trip to LA. Was able to sit with Edvi and Beau at ABC Watchwerks. Great guys, great watch guys. Their passion for vintage is awesome. Beau was kind enough to show me some of his work in progress, which is outstanding, as well as let me see the best example of a MilSub i have ever seen in my life. It was on his wrist, which he was happy to take off and hand to me. He also gave me some great info on my watch, 1969 production and Mark 0 pushers, who knew?Cant wait to get my 6263 back. I know its a good hands.

Exactly the same watch I also got in 1971. No Daytona inscription. I was very young and unwise, and sold it in 1976 for getting a Sub. You made my eyes wet seeing it again !! Enjoy your watch. Who knows where my ex is now !

Beautiful.

I might take up watch making and fix it myself so as to eliminate the X factor ... I joke as that's not reasonable but it's so hard to find someone who cares as much as the owner be it car, watch or vital organ.
