Why get an Omega if you can Afford a Rolex..
My friend asked me this question.
I have been looking to get an Omega Aqua Terra Blue dial, but another watch keeps coming in the way. I am very biased towards the color Blue. I love any blue dial watch, but unfortunately not a fan of two tone, so the sub doesn't do it. The WG sub is just too expensive. Fast forward after Basel and now the new 39mm OP blue dial has my vote. I don't know if the green markings are amazing, but I know I love a blue dial. Anyway so I did not know what to tell my friend when he asked me why I would get an Omega if I could afford a Rolex.. Lol Not talking about Sea masters, etc. just the classic Aqua Terra VS the DJ or OP. |

Why not take the opportunity to show him how an Omega is an equally valid choice? I did that years ago when my buddy was looking to get a watch, and now he's had his Seamaster for seventeen years and absolutely loves it.

I was looking at the Sub and the PO a few years back and went for the Rolex, I thought it was better crafted and looking.

I like both brands so I would buy what I liked. For me in pure looks and knowing your love of blue I would take the new OP over the Omega, and I would also think twice about the Pelagos given you have shown you are not anti dive watches, it is a full in house movement and a great looking piece IMHO, would depend what else you had in your set.

I like Omega, but I ask myself the same question when I go to buy one. I looked at a Speedmaster and bought a Daytona, I looked at a Seamaster Planet Ocean and bought a SubLV.
Still I think Omega is a great watch and I can see myself picking one up in the future.

Get the one that you like the best. Just because one can afford a Rolex, does not mean that a Rolex will work for that person. If the Omega works for you, then go and get it.

and if you like to go vintage, go for a moon watch. The Rolex Daytona did NOT make the NASA cut at the time...

You like a particular Omega more than you like a particular Rolex so you go with the Omega

I like my Datejust 2 in blue! I had a white face Aqua Terra. It is a great watch, too.

Don't get yourself wrapped up in prices and brands. They are both quality brands and price does not always correlate to value.
If you love blue and Rolex just isn't there for you, Omega is a logical option. |

Get what you want to look at the next decade or two. To me there really is no choice because I have never like Omegas in the past, and now you couldn't pay me to wear one. I really think they're ugly, I hate the whole Bond thing, and I especially can't stand nearly 50 years of bragging about being the moon watch when at least two Speedys failed on Apollo lunar missions. They use a more complex movement that has not proven more accurate, or more reliable, or needs less maintenance, and is limited in where it can be serviced. They are part of the vast corporate beast that is the Swatch Group, don't hold their value very well and shell out so many special editions it's become a joke.
I'm just kidding. Get what you like best (although everything I said is true). |

I think your friend has a point if you take the retaining value into consideration. Recently I sold my 1 year old PO, I lost about 40% of its retail price. If you intend to flip your watch in the future, Rolex is a much better option.

Why? Because the 2254.50 was a sexy watch the first time I laid my eyes on it and still makes me smile 7 years later.

I love my Omegas.
In fact, neither of my Rolexs have seen my wrist in quite some time. Your friend is a brand .....fill in the blank. But what you like. Wear what you like.

Um, if you love blue dials, why not consider the YM? Absolute beauty of a watch and way more of a looker than the Omega IMHO.
