Omega is trying too hard to be Rolex. That is why I like their vintage watches better.
I would have a Speedy over a Daytona. I would have a vintage Connie or De Ville over a vintage DJ. Omega was just way cooler in the 60's. |

You missed the entire point of my post. You have fun buying from a boutique and I'll buy from a trusted seller or LNIB at the depreciated price or close to it.

Why not get both?
I have both Rolex and Omega and love both brands equally. |

Buying watches at this level, I deal with AD's, not "trusted sellers"... Guys will do anything to shave a few bucks. If you have to do that to get a luxury timepiece, maybe you can't truly afford one yet...

Seems like a rather silly thing to say.. My first two decent watches were Rolex's, but my third was a Speedmaster Pro Sapphire Sandwich... I love it to bits.
Buy what you like - nothing wrong with the right Omega even if they are considered 'beneath' Rolex. The same could be said for 'why buy Rolex if you can afford Patek'... Plenty of reasons to buy one instead of a Patek. |

The Daytona is 'better' I suppose, but I reckon the Speedy makes a much better all round daily 'beater'. You only know which is better (for you) after wearing for a while.. Truth be told I actually like wearing my Sub more than my daytona. There's just something about it, so usable.. |

Ummm....you can walk into an Omega boutique and they will regulate it right there in front of you. Will Rolex do this? How long would that take? Quote:
Ummm...how many Rolex watches went to the moon? Limited where it can be serviced? Like it matters to you which state the watch goes? Are you hand delivering the watch or mailing it just like you would a Rolex to an to a RSC? Quote:

I sold my Bi-Metalic Sub when I noticed that every man and his dog was wearing either a genuine or fake one. A bit like Apple, if everyone tells you that you need an Iphone you will always get a queue of Sheep lining up to get one and don't listen to anyone that says Rolex is a good investment! If you buy anything at the wrong price you will always loose big time!!

Nope. Teach a man to go to an ADs and he buys a nice Rolex, teach a man to buy smart and buys a nice collection.

"Prices for the stainless steel model start at CHF 6.300 Swiss Francs" http://www.fratellowatches.com/omega-globemaster/ And then OPs question. Like said here many times. Buy the one that speaks to you. I have 5 modern Omegas and several vintage ones. The reason I don`t (yet) have a Rolex is simple. There are very few models that speaks to me. DJII and GMT master are only ones currently and sooner or later one or both of them will find they way to me. |

I offer as well the best value for the money in meteorite dial watches as well as the one that makes the most sense for the material. It would be a shame to refuse to buy this because it's "only an Omega"...

The GMT may have been worn but UNDER his space suit, NOT on the surface of the suit. All the pics of the GMT rolex were on the rolex bracelet, and under the spacesuit. The Omega used quite a large strap, the SEB12100030, so the watch would fit. The Omega speedmaster was the ONLY FLIGHT QUALIFIED watch by NASA, not rolex, not longines, |

Omega is focusing on anti-magnetic movements and it's own certification process. Rolex is not. Omega is focusing on ceramics. Rolex is not. Omega is coming out with vintage-inspired models. Rolex is not. Whether you think any of these things are positive or not, I don't think you can say that Omega is trying to be Rolex. Trying to compete with Rolex? Yes. Trying to be Rolex? Hell no! |

Omega is trying to be Rolex in the way that Hublot is trying to be AP. They are trying to to be Rolex in the way that Tudor is trying to be Omega. They are trying to position themselves to compete in the same market at the same price points. Rolex is doing work in anti-magnetism. It's not their end-all because they already have reliable, in-house movements. Rolex is about evolution, not revolution. Rolex is not focusing on ceramics? Really? I guess coco Chanel is the big innovator in that space. I think you could say nearly every Rolex model is vintage inspired. How about the Orange hand Explorer II or the no date sub? Omega is reacting to everything that Rolex does, and Rolex barely acknowledges that Omega exists. That's just how it is. I have 2 omegas and 1 Rolex, so that's not just some hater opinion. |

Looking at the watches, I don't get the impression that either brand is trying to copy the other in any way. Styling is, by and large, totally different. Omega uses mostly display backs now and has a decorated movement; Rolex largely doesn't. Omega is focusing on fully ceramic cases; Rolex doesn't make them. Omega is focusing on antimagnetic tech and coaxial escapements; Rolex is not. Omega releases new models at a relatively fast pace; Rolex is glacial by comparison. Omega likes commemorating events with limited editions; Rolex does not. Omega mixes vintage inspired designs with the totally new; Rolex focuses on refining the same vintage designs it's used for decades.
Aside from their incidentally being the two biggest names in luxury watches, why are people trying so hard to see these brands in terms of each other? |

These Omega vs Rolex threads drive me nuts sometimes.
Anyone who just makes a blanket statement along the lines of "dude just buy a Rollie" is a tool and knows nothing of watches. They are also the same people that tend to give the proud, informed members of this community a bad name. My advice is get the Omega if it's what you like and a new friend as well. |
