I don't care what they think about what I'm wearing. I've bought watches wearing a Seiko, with shorts and sandals and my favourite worn t-shirt.

I walked into a Manufacture in Geneva wearing my travelling gear, complete with daypack, and I got to meet the founder/chief watchmaker, the guy who just assembled a classic, and walked out with the watch.

Money talks in this 'business'.

I've only been to one AD. That was in HK. I was dressed neat casual. I was treated with great respect. Being the first customer of the day also helps.

The poor salespeople that are too lazy to invest any of their time in product knowledge, sales in general and just plain courtesy are what I call " armchair qualifiers" Over the years I have seen them all. The best thing some of the owners/managers could do is to take a good look at that person and ask themselves one question "Would I buy a watch from that man/woman?

on weekdays im usually in shirt and pants, so that is reasonable, ive also known to walk in with shorts/tshirt too.

get treated all the same, as long as you show that you are here for business and not to just waste time.

I was treated badly by an AD when I turned up in the shop unshaven and wearing casual clothing. But otherwise I have had nothing but great experiences from visiting / buying from AD, even if I wore casual clothes.

If I wore a suit or tux into my AD, they would laugh at me. I do jeans and a T shirt there often. Always treated well.

I'm sure there are AD's who differ greatly than mine though.

I agree with what you say.
Also I think its very true what Rolex_07 says, unless of course the AD already knows you.

i bought my dsub when i was on a cruise in the caribbean. i went to the ad in st. thomas wearing a bathing suit, flip flops, and a muscle shirt. i'll bet this is pretty common down there.

I never "dress for the AD''. When ever I hapen to stop by an AD I'm wearing whatever I put on that morning, could be a suit, casual, or even shorts and t-shirt. While I feel they shoulld give you some respect because you really can't judge a book by it's cover, that respect should go both ways. Just because someone is "on the other side of the counter" it doesn't mean they deserve any less respect. But I do agree that some sales people tend to look down their noses at people who don't look like they can afford what they are looking at.

I've found that perhaps initially they use looks/clothes to judge, but as soon as you start talking about Rolex details and demonstrate that you probably know more than they do, they stop that crap and pay attention.

x2

But most stores, not just jewelery/AD's will give you better attention if you are well dressed. I'm not saying it's right or wrong, just fact.

Now with my AD, they know me, so it doesn't matter what I wear! They also don't care if I'm wearing my Glock (good to have if you're carrying lots of "flash that cash")!

Hi everyone!

Just bringing these threads back to life!

But back to the topic. I have found that you are treated better when you are dressed up. Has anyone else found this to be true?

Yes, sometimes it does.
But I believe no matter how well you dress, once you started the conversation,
they will know whether you are a buyer or not
and yes, totally agree, never dress for the AD

I wore Flips flops a wrinkled polo shirt and dirty cargo shorts that showed off my tattoos. My AD treated me like a king. I have a certain "air" about me as my friends say, maybe a sort of smugness, but when your at an AD, cash is king. I think a lot of people on this forum put to much stock in trying to look the part of a Rolex owner. If you just act like who you are, you will fit in anywhere. Trust me, in the cargo short and flip flop world I live in there are more millionaires with $10,000 watches on then you might think. I am pretty new school in my money and thinking though than most on this forum.

Same hear, when I bought my Audi, I showed up to the dealer in a vintage 1967 Series IIa Land Rover. The first sales guy I walked buy gave me a dick look and asked if he could help me. I looked past him to the sales guy looking out the window admiring my Land Rover and said "you can't help me, but that guy is going to sell me a car today" he thought I was joking until I drove out with my new A4.

Wempe has real poor customer service. My wife and I went in there, she had her Cartier and a Chloe handbag, and I had my GMT IIc and a Locste polo on and this sales lady looked us up and down. We were going to get my wife a new watch, needless to say we went elsewhere.
