Hard to beat Rolex, as an overall brand.
AP is better at details and finishes and complications.

Rolex is a great brand, AP however produces less and has more quality IMO over Rolex

I frequently cheat on my Rolex wife with my mistress Audemars. Not matter how reliable and comfortable she is there is something that allures me to the dark side.

AP is superior in brand class, finishing quality and movement decoration. Rolex wins in terms of everyday wearability, robustness and reliability.

Different segments. Like comparing an Audi with a Bentley. The Rolex is awesome in many ways, but not comparable with the AP brand when it comes to exclusivity. Hence the price difference...

Bingo.

Met Olivier Audemars last week--one the the nicest most humble people you could meet.

It is still the oldest fine watch-making manufacturer never to have left the hands of its founding families (and before you say Patek--that's owned by the Stern family now).

I thought Rolex was still, in some fashion, still under the founding family?

When Hans Wilsdorf died, in 1960, ownership of Rolex S.A. was passed on to a charitable trust. And today the trust still owns Rolex but this don't mean its a non profit company .

And yes, AP (founded 1875 in Vallée de Joux) is older than Rolex (founded 1905 in England and only moved to Geneva in 1919).

AP is definitely above Rolex in terms of finishings (case, bracelet, dials) and including movement decorations. Rolex is more robust.

Prices are also much higher.

I missed the "oldest" part.

I knew it was in a charitable trust, but couldn't remember if any of the family was on the board, or if it was for profit. http://www.quora.com/Is-Rolex-a-non-...-And-if-so-why

As for the OP's question, the level of finishing and details on AP watches are way above Rolex. I never fully understood what this truly meant until I felt one in person. The bracelets alone speak for themselves.

Rolex has different advantages and obviously their most timeless designs are older than AP's Royal Oak.

Well put ! 🍻

Bose has good resale value. its a mass market, highly recognizable brand

doesnt mean its superior to a real high end equipment like Krell/Focal etc

Question wasn't which is the most recognized in the world...Rolex is a marketing machine, and since they pump out 1 million watches a year they can be.

Being a watch everyone knows is not necessarily a good thing FYI...some people like exclusivity.

When comparisons occur subjectivity is SO important.
Does a watch [or car or guitar etc] make you go "yes" on the inside. Are you desperate to own it? Did your money just get less valuable in your pocket because you were thinking that all you have to do is part with some NOW and you can have that certain item?
APs that I have seen haven't given me that feeling but a few Rolex models have so that's why I am still spending and dreaming about Rolexes. It's a feeling. A subjective opinion. Great fun though!!

Marketing vs. Product Quality

Most people recognize Rolls Royce as the best car in the world, but they don't retain their value either. Just because something retains its value doesn't mean it's superior. What it means is supply and demand are matched to price: that's marketing not product superiority.

Not true at all.

If you keep this attitude on this site, I'm guessing you will either learn and truly appreciate what these watches are, or you won't last long on here...
