rolex submariner 1680 project

Hi guys! I am a New membre and I want to build my self a vintage sub 1680. I was wondering if the 1570 movement from a date just 1600 series would fit the 1680 case?

Thanks
Nicholas

To my knowledge the 1570 (actually 1575 with date function) was the same whether DJ or Sub.

welcome to the forum , good luck with the project , but you may find that buying a complete watch is cheaper , the parts bill adds up very quickly , unless you have some already as a starting point .

I like your honesty

Movement = cal 1570 / 1575 (date)
Crown and Tube = 702 / 7020
Crystal = Tropic 127
Hands = Make sure you get the 1680/1665 hands, second hand is not the same as 5513
Insert = MK3 Fat Font Insert
case and caseback = good luck finding one (more fakes floating around than real)
Dial = mk1, mk2, mk3 or service
bezel assembly = buy a new sealed one as it is hard to find a used crystal retention ring and friction ring.

Yesterday I was quoted 350$cad for a 1680 bezel ring. Black Insert. Pearl.
Not bad; I went for it.

I've built a fair number of watches and it is always cheaper to get a complete watch.

Post pictures of your adventure!

So there are 4 parts to a complete bezel assembly.

1. The Bezel
2. The Insert that goes onto the Bezel
3. The Crystal Retaining ring
4. The flat friction ring

Like this:

Are you saying all 4 parts are 350 cad... new sealed bezel assembly with a service insert?
Did you have to trade anything in.. like your old one?

If so, I'll take 1

It is a tudor 7021/0 and it already had the retainer and crystal. I lost the original bezel and the insert. You are right thta there is also that friction ring in there. I left the watch with the AD. Nothing was traded. I will post a pic of what c$350 will get you! They were very nice to deal with.

What is a crystal retaining ring? I thought there is only the flat friction ring?

I just google it. Did not know there was a crystal retaining ring when I changed my insert. This sits firmly with the case to retain he crystal in place and this is why I did not notice that was an additional ring.

Cheers, Wing Zero.

I cAn confirm that a tudor sub is waterproof without the bezel ring. The retainer is what holds the crystal. At least mine anyhow.

Oh ok, I thought you could actually buy these, didn't know you have to leave your watch with them. It's still a good price without the crystal retainer ring.

If it had all 4, it would be a steal at that price as most complete 1680/5513 sealed service bezel assemblies sell for around $600-700 on the open market.

If I ever make it up to Canada, I might take the whole bezel assembly off my 1680 and leave it with the AD.

Yup. The crystal retention ring fits over the crystal and when pushed all the way down, is what actually holds (squeezes) the crystal to the case lip.

The crystal retention ring is actually what the bezel clicks onto, and the friction ring is what provides the tension so that when you press down on your bezel, it rotates and when you don't press down, it doesn't rotate.

I guess I will find out if my retainer is worn out. Either it was the old bez or the retainer. If I lose it again I will report back! I agreed to leave it with them. They will give me a rolex AD service paper which adds value to it. There are so many fakes on the net I could barf

Wow.. I have been trying to source for a complete bezel set too... maybe I should try the same trick but at my local AD.
