Blue brothers

Incoming!!! What can I say I’m a sucker for the Nautilus blue! Wasn’t bonding enough with my WG Sub so off it went to another home. Came across this double sealed 5980/1A and finally realized a dream of mine. Almost went with a black dial 5980 but just can’t get enough of that mesmerizing blue. My wife says it’s just like “the other one” but I’m convinced they are different enough. What do you think--will they be happy together?

Haven’t figured out how to add comments between pics but I’ve included a pic just after cutting the seals, some wrist shots and a group family pic.

I’ve also recently added a VC Overseas Chrono. Haven’t sized it yet, as I’m planning to put it on black rubber strap with a deployant. Not sure why the VC OS doesn’t get much love as it’s quite the value at current discounts. IMO it’s one of the best options available in top tier makers that have a rubber strap. Would appreciate opinions on this one.

Congrats! I too love the vacheron! Sort of hoping they release an updated version with in house soon but those who wait are always waiting. Good on you for acquiring and enjoying now

Great pickup! They definitely can both exist in the same collection (I wish they both existed in mine!)

Thanks, Tom. The VC is not in-house but I believe it's the worlds thinnest true column wheel chrono movement. Tall task for VC to match (pun intended), not to mention I would never buy the first production run of anything if I can help it. It also has 150m water resistance, big date (added by VC), jumping minute counter, all which make it a great daily piece. Specifically with the rubber strap it will add a nice versatility. Here are some pics I found online with rubber strap that really sucked me in...

nice pick up and beautiful collection!

may i ask how you find the thickness of the 5980 as compared to the 5711? my only complaint about the 5711 is that it's too thin and i was thinking of flipping it for the 5980 as i want something with a bit more presence and oomph...

Visually on the wrist--proportionally to my arm and from a general shape standpoint--the 5980 is absolute perfection. Very well balanced, and not to thick or too thin in almost all wear scenarios. Keep in mind this is individual perception, which can be conditioned to prefer thicker, thinner or medium based on what you normally see on your wrist. Sometimes I still think the DSSD is too thick or too large and other times it's just perfect. There are other times (with rolled sleeves, for example) where my IWC Big Pilot seems perfect on the wrist and other's appear too small.

What I'm getting at is there are watches that work best situationally or are more universal. From my experience, the IWC Big Pilot, DSSD and 5711 work best in specific wear scenarios--it's also what I love about them. The 5711 can perfectly tuck under a dress shirt or any cuff for that matter. It also looks great with short sleeves, but proportionally it does appear thin (sometimes too thin, I think) and more like a bracelet but that's the beauty of this piece. You either get that or you don't. Some it bothers, but likely because it feels unbalanced based on what their use to seeing or because they want more wrist presence. I'm not saying the 5711 doesn't work in all other situations--it does, I'm just saying it really shines in certain applications.

Continuing the thought from above, the VC OS, 5980, Omega SMP and a SubC for that matter, are all more universal pieces IMO--the sweet spot for watch size IMO. For the person who wants all around pieces, these are what I'd suggest for go-to, works with anything use.

Appreciate it, Kevin. The black dial doesn't come with rubber or croc straps but luckily the VC boutique was willing to add. Also had to purchase the deployant buckle but it sure adds to the flexibility of this watch (dress up/down)
