need advise on my first rolex..

I am thinking about getting my first rolex and cannot decide which one. my wife and I came down to either explorer II or submariner.

I would prefer the one that has higher resale value down the road, so that if i ever want to upgrade to a better one.

so which one usually holds more resale value? and what do you guys think?

also, besides explorer II and submariner, what other brands have good resale value?

thank you very much!!!

Welcome to TRF. IMHO, you need to try both watches on and see which one gives you that warm and fuzzy feeling. I wouldn't worry about resale value as once you own the Rolex, it won't be a question of selling it but of when can I get another while keeping the original one you bought.

Of the two, I would go with the Sub. With either watch, you can't go wrong because it's a Rolex.

John

The Submariner is iconic and there is always a market for it..

The EXP II is a popular watch for adventurers, and nobody thought that the 1655's would be selling for what they do today.

You just can't buy a watch expecting that you will know what the market or collectability will be down the road.

It has the orange hand and a different dial than all the other models. these are going for up to $15000-$20000 in some cases. all others have red hand.

so does it make sense to spend a little more to buy a special edition color of rolex?

what do we currently have in special edition?

Everyone is going to tell you the same thing here. Go to an AD (Authorized Dealer) and try them all on. Resale shouldn't be a thought unless you know what you are going to flip. All Rolex's hold their value decently - to very well. The worst ones for holding their value are:

Anything with Diamonds on the dial (aka serti) or diamonds on the bezel (real killer in money)
TT Daytona's - don't know why on this one and TT = two tone gold/steel
Of the sport lineup, Expy II's probable are the worst at holding their value, but there has been a lot of renewed interest as of late.

Not really special editions more limited in numbers over a shorter time period. like the current GV milgauss. Even the SS daytona is nearly impossible to find for less than $3000 to $4000 above the retail price

Unfortunately you will 99.99% not be able to get hold of any of these rarer models form an authorised dealer and will have to pay through the roof for them

Put it this way i think all of us on here would like one too but would not spend so much on it

A rolex is something brought from the heart. I hear a lot about resale value but in the end I think the watch you buy is with you on a journey and should be brought to wear and not to sell again in the future.. I have both the sub non date and the Explorer II black face. Both mean a lot to me and I don't really think about what they are worth in years to come. Though my daughter does lol

If I were you, I would decide on what watch you want first. In the process of looking for your watch, you'll find out alot about your other questions. There are grey dealers, personal dealers and authorized dealers.

One (not the only) of the best grey dealers is alan furman. Just google them and you'll see alot of the models, including the list price and what you "might" get for a discount from an AD. Some AD's work with you, some don't. In NYC, you have some choices.

Welcome to TRF!

I would not think too much about re-sale value but simply go to your AD and go for the one that appeals most to you once you see it on your wrist.

You can really go wrong with either. Both are equally good watches.

Best of luck!

Oh, don't forget the pics!
