genuine.
Got up at 5am to go to a tag sale. I knew the family had money.
Was first in line.

Running around grabbing things, I see this bag, I could not read the writing but it had that long tight print and I thought it looked like a Patek or Vacheron signature.
But i could not read it due to the bag and poor lighting. But for $8, it is a no brainer.

I get most of the stuff that I am interested in and put it in the pile by the cashier.
Then I finally get a chance to take a photo of the dial, so I can zoom in on it.

IT'S A PATEK.. Sweet. So I am carrying it around with me instead of putting it in my pile, just to make sure no one else grabs it.

I go back and find more items to put in my pile, and finally go to pay.
I look at my bags, and the one with the Patek is gone. I go running around the house looking for it and sweating bullets.
Finally go back and look at my pile and I had set it down with some other items.
Pay for it, stick it in my shirt pocket, and make sure i do not lose it again.

Sweet deal, indeed!

I'd love to see some more pictures of the watch, though!

Congrats, great find!! Before you open the champagne though, please post some pics for us. There looks to be 3 lines of text on the dial - which is unusual.

I thought it was a ref 2451. But too small, it's a ref 438.
Midsize, 28mm.
Back has the previous owners name.
So, you guys don't get to see that.

Nice find!
The dial looks rather worn, is the "M" faded? It almost looks like there ar signs of corrosion on the dial, but maybe its the pic quality...
Spaulding-Gorham doesnt necessarily add value to your watch but you can expect it to be worth slightly more than 8$

No, dial is mint. What you are seeing are scratches from the crystal. "M" is actually full and clear.
No corrosion, perhaps you are seeing the 70 years of grease and dirt built up around the edge of the crystal.

Should be worth between $3-8k - judging by a few auctions, eBay sold a mint one at $7100 relatively recently, Christies sold a mint one at $7600 in 2011.

First thing you NEED to do is contact Patek for an "Extract from the achieves" to prove authenticity.

Cool piece, nice find! Do you plan to keep it? If no, put a feeler out there (with Archives extract) before you even consider refurbishing the piece.

I prefer to think of it as working hard. I go to probably 150 sales, auctions and flea markets a year.+ working full time.
And maybe it pays off once or twice a year.
This is not the best deal I have ever had.

Yes, as I thought the pic did not reveal everything. I was thinking about corrosion because of the strap pins, but of course they are never conclusive.

Well done! The hard work work certainly paid off and all that training helps you now to earn back on that education

Any chance you will share that "best deal" story with us? I am sure that must be one really cool story to hear
