2016 Explorer 1, great even without the date?
I noticed that many TRF members are thrilled about the new updated 2016 Explorer 1. I know that many current Explorer 1 owners of the previous versions love theirs. I really like the Explorer 1 (39mm), more than the Explorer 2, however, I just can't get past the no date function.....What do you guys think?

Speaking for myself, the date function does not come into play whatsoever. The simplicity of the dial is the Explorer's strongest feature, the vintage generation 1016 adds to that vibe by having a bling-less dial, no white gold, nothing shiny, flat, matte, just about the closest thing to a pure tool watch that Rolex has ever created. |

I like having a date on my watches, but the new explorer is quite nice.

the new explorer is great but i need a date and a Chrono / timing bezel ideally. I can make due with just the Chrono / timing bezel and no actual date function because you can create a makeshift date with either of these complications.

I couldn't care less about a date function. That's why I own an Explorer.

In this day and age with computers and mobile phones the date is readily accessible on the odd occasion when reference to it may be required.
No doubt the date feature is very useful. However the beauty of the Explorer without the date is pure simple unobstructed or detracted pleasure to the eye from an aesthetic perspective. The same may equally be said about the no-date Submariner. And how do you think a Daytona would look with a cyclops....... The best option is to have a second watch to swap when that desire to have a date feature becomes too much and you can cure the pain.

If you can't get past the watch not having a date, then it's not for you.

I like having one watch with a date function, certainly. But I really like my Explorer and BB for their clean lines while telling time; the quintessential function of a wristwatch. Date not mandatory for me.

It's a great looking piece but I prefer to have a date. That and someone I dislike with great passion wears one. It's ruined it for me.

The fact that it doesn't have a date is why I love it.

That's what the Explorer I would be with a date, right?

They look great on a leather strap, and I love the typography.

Perfect travel watch, makes setting local timezone and quick. I tried on the 2016 Explorer one. It is one great everyday watch.

I've always preferred watches without the date. They're more symmetrical, and setting the date is a pain in the arse. Explorer is a fantastic watch, maybe the purest expression of the Rolex sport watch.
Now that I think of it, why don't I have one? |

The 1016 is the epitome of what an iconic and perfectly designed classic tool watch is and Speedolex has an absolutely gorgeous gorgeous example...imo Rolex' vintage sports watches are by far and above my all time favorite references...the simplistic matte dial and lack of date complication are what make me love some of the vintage Rolex references i.e. The 1016,5513/12,1019 even a 1665 due to the lack of the cyclops bc that's what really turns me off about having a date. ...I don't need a date function and don't intend on ever owning a model WITH a date function with the exception of a Tudor Big Block or maybe a matte 16660 SD. Out of all the modern Rolex, I'm drawn to the 116600 for that very reason along with the domed crystal and thinner lugs. I wish Rolex would consider somewhat of a slight case re design but I know that's very wishful thinking...my experience with owning the 114060 was extremely disappointing (and short lived)due to just how uncomfortable the the new case was to me...I didn't think I would ever regret selling my beloved 14060M F serial as much as I did once I had it...within 2 months it was gone and the watch after that was gone within a month due to what I believe was fate. I came across my dream watch ...my beautiful '74 maxi dial 5512 Sub.....what an iconic watch just as the 1016!!...I'm not knocking anyone for owning modern pieces, there are plenty of beautiful references, however I just prefer simplicity and vintage seems to check all the boxes for me because of those reasons.

If you put a date on this watch it would change the entire character of the watch. There was a period when the Explorer did have a date. The Explorer Date (ref 5700?) but to me it just didn't look right and thankfully it is still sans date.
