Nakaya. Thank you, Jim.

I was hesitant for quite some time to buy a Nakaya from nibs.com. The colors were an issue, communication with the vendor rather haphazard, I'm reluctant to buy things I haven't seen first-hand and touched, prior experience with the supplier hadn't been stellar, there was an issue (non-issue) with the particular pen I wanted to buy...

But I consulted with my friend Jim Richardson and he gave me the little nudge I needed. Now I'm thankful he did.

The box is underwhelming as it looks so much more impressive in pictures. The same happens when you open the box. But then you get to squeeze the pen out from it's soft cloth wrap and this glorious chubby shinny torpedo smiles at you. Such warmth. Such sweet caramel-like texture. And the dark green color underneath its translucent luster comes to life in contrast to the rhodium clip. Beautiful.

The cap comes off softly, smoothly as if the pen were in a rush to start writing. The threads above the section are of a lighter color that reassures you that the pen is made of layers of urushi lacquer. The nib is stubby and broad like a Samurai warrior. The sheen of the rhodium nib is elegant and just right.

The cap comes back on as if made in a lathe at NASA. Amazing that a hand-made locking joint is so robust and precise, albeit simple.

I haven't inked the pen yet. I don't even know what type of ink to use. Black or blue. The instruction papers suggest that the urushi material is more delicate to handle than I had thought. I did pass the nib on some Clairefontaine paper and it glided like ice on a hot surface, just the way I like it. The nib I ordered is XBroad and I don't know yet what kind of line it'll give me. I also asked the nib to be a bit wet as recommended by Maestro Jim.

In summary, I'm very pleased with the arrival of my new Nakaya Piccolo ao-tameruni. I'll fondle it some and then ink it and put it to earn it's keep.

Thank y'all for reading and for putting up with me.

Really glad you like it. It will likely take a day or so for the ebonite feed to get fully saturated so be patient with it, the best is yet to come.

Today a Cigar portable showed up at my door. It is one I traded a couple of my maki-e to get. It will be my first clipless pen so a learning experience for me.

I guess we all always have something new to learn, huh...??? Thank you so much for the good advice. And the Nakaya, of course, is not the only good advice I have received from you.

PS- There is a very special pen in the bowls of USPS trying to reach me.

That is the ugliest pen I have every seen.

I will offer to purchase it from you to save your collection from having to endure such a poor specimen.

Let me know what you need to have for it! I will even take the ugly box off your hands also if you include it in the price. OMG!!! I can't believe my generosity! Someone slap me!

Geeze! Some people will buy anything.

Not at all sure I will be able to get used to a clipless pen. This one is definitely on probation.

If it is in stock they usually ship next workday and 3-5 days US delivery time.

If it needs to be ordered, two answers. If Nakaya has it in stock add about one week to delivery time. If Nakaya has to make it add 2-5 months.

Thank you for your kind words...!!!

If the pen is available, they take a couple of days to check the nib, especially if you ask for a "little wetter" flow, etc. I'd guess customization would take an additional day or so. Then it's about five days in the mail unless you request expedited shipping.

However, earlier today I ordered a converter and a notebook and it was shipped within a couple of hours.

The Piccolo is somewhat stubby, as it's thick in relation to its length. But the section is perfect for my hand, thus it feels very comfortable. I'm tempted to order a Portable the next time around.
