Playing with Poison Ivy (Urishi and others) - Jim

I thought I had shared this, but couldn't find it. It is one of the really good and understandable articles on Urishi and other finishes. It is written by Jim Richardson and is one of those articles that demands to be read.

Very good stuff. I think you will come away surprised as I have.

Jim ought to teach a college course on this wonderful subject.

Now, would it be fair to call Dupont Chinese lacquer Urushi...? A Nakaya has a different feel than a lacquered Dupont, but that might be attributed to the base material: metal vs ebonite.

Yes, the Laque de Chine is urushi and some of the St Dupont pens also used traditional maki-e techniques. But on some of the ST Dupont pens they could not use natural urushi because it is never truly transparent. It always has some color. An example is on the Shaman. There a completely colorless overcoat was needed and so a synthetic lacquer was used.

Contrast that with the ST Dupont Medici where natural urushi is used.

Great. The Walter's has a fantastic collection of Japanese art pieces and may are online. You can browse their online Japanese & Korean collection at this link.

I loved finding out about other cultures, and the folklore of a peoples often can tell even more than the actual facts and statistics.
