Icon5 GMT II price and should I buy over Sub?

Hi All,

Two issues for your considerations

1. Is US$4,000 for an excellent, box and papers GMTII 2003 (black bezel) a "good deal"?

Context: I know I want one and they don't make 'em any more.

2. I also know I will end up with a 16610 at some point. I can't get both now, so the question is - Sub now, GMT II later, or the other way around?

Context: I'm thinking the GMT II now and the 16610 later since the sub is still in production (I also have a Z 14060M COSC) - should be plenty around.

Any and all thoughts, suggestions, gentle flaming appreciated

Many thanks

2. Yes I'd follow your original idea. Preowned subs will only get cheaper down the road since more are being put out there.

I am biased as I have a GMT 11 but it is a great watch Also it would be a contrast to your sub, and offers the timezone function. Good luck

Definitely GMT now as you have one sub already and the GMT is an awesome watch.

I have been watching GMT II's for a few months on eBay from only reputable dealers. I would say go for the GMT II, BUT... hold out for an "F" series or later with no case holes. I have seen a few of these in pristine condition for $3800 on eBay. But, the dealers I know are here in the US... my vote GMT II "F" or later....

I would get the GMT II now, I have a hard time even pulling out my COSC Sub now that I have a GMT II.

I think if you go with the GMT II you will be really pleased. I own an F-serial that is my favorite watch--and I've owned and flipped a bunch of models and brands.

I just picked up a 14060M Sub as a "brother" for my GMT and now I think I have the perfect combination of Rolex sport models. See how happy they look together? Now that I've switched the insert on my GMT to red/black I find that they each have their own distinctive look.

Actually, once you get a GMT II you may find that you really don't need the 16610 Sub. You already have the classic Sub look with the 14060M, and if you want the date you just wear the GMT II.

See, I just saved you a pretty big stack of cash!

I would go with the Red/Blue, Red/Black bezel they look to close in appearance for me anyway. I would get the GMTII first, those are a cult favorite and the price for those will stay steady, the sub will dip when the new steel sub is released (late '09 - mid '10). Subs are the most common sport variant, when the market floods witht trade-ins you will get a steal. Hell you can have a steel sub NOW for ~3500-4000 in reasonable shape.

go for GMT-II now and you can always get a sub later.
You may want to condiser different bezel color since the black GMT is fairly similar to a sub.

Agreed, buy the GMT II first, as I have seen some high asking prices recently for BNIB versions.

Shawn,

Thankyou for your contribution to my retirement fund Your pic will probably be the nail in the oyster

Spare201,

I hope you are right about Sub prices in a couple of years. This would be my third Rolex this year and I will need some recovery time if I can control myself

If I get the GMT I will be seeking a Pepsi bezel insert to change up the look, for sure

Z-Sub,

See second comment, above.

Sea-dweller,

The prices on BNIB 3186 GMTs do seem a little over-hyped. Personally, I'm not fussed on the colour of the hairspring inside the case

TRF,

Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou for validating my obsession

You will not likely find this price on this watch in this condition again. Get it if you can!!!!!!!!!!

Update

Dear All

I didn't get to drop by the dealer with the GMT last weekend

Hopefully he will agree to hold until Sat

Patience may be a virtue, but it's not a strength of mine ...
