Rolex 16750

Thoughts on this watch? I have never bought a vintage watch before, but I found one from 1981 that I am strongly considering.

I know everyone's tastes are different, but if you were me, would you make the plunge? :)

Thanks!

Thanks. I got it from Jacek and had LA Watchwerks tidy up the case and bracelet. Prolly shouldn't sell. Prolly will regret it.

16750 is a fantastic watch. And there are many factors that would affect my decision to purchase one. For instance, does the watch have the original, matte dial or a service dial? Is the case (over)polished? What's the service history? Does the watch have the original bezel insert? etc.

If you can upload a few pictures of the watch that you're interested in, we can provide more feedback/opinions.

I like the other one referenced above better because it has tritium hands rather than luminova replacement hands. That's more important to me than box and papers.

I´ve been looking for years to get a nice matte dial 16750 just because Magnum PI had one in the TV series
But every time I´ve been ready to pull the trigger a nicer 1675 surfaces right in from of me

Now that's funny. If you end up finding one as nice as your 1675s then I'm sure it'll be worth the wait.

Not to get this thread started into another Tom Selleck fan thread but just who doesn't want a 16750 after seeing this

The one posted by the OP from 1981 is $1k more expensive but has the original boxes and booklets with a service paper from a RSC. Is that worth an extra thousand, not in my opinion, but I do think the bezel insert is nicer on this one. It also has luminova hands, which admittedly can be relumed to match the dial with the luminova removed, but at an additional cost. The only thing I can see with the 1982 watch is the clasp code of A on the bracelet dates it to 1976, but not a huge deal in my opinion. Unless you specifically want a watch with a serial from 1981, I would probably choose the other one.

Totally agree, here's a few more shots to hype up the 16750 a little more!

Not to entirely derail this thread, but that last photo has always bugged me, as it makes no chronological sense. Especially, considering Magnum served in Viet Nam, and if this was supposed to be when he was 4 or 5 year-old, it would've been some time in the 1950s at the latest.

Yeah, heavy dramatic license there. Photo would have been taken likely before the GMT Master came into existence but since the actual watch was first shown in late 1983, it is probably a 16750, and it seems to be a Mk 1 matte dial as far as I can tell. But it's probably supposed to be an early 1675 I guess if you really stretch the dates a lot.

This is another one that I am considering. Has original box and papers, but is more expensive at $12k.

Agreed that it is a steep price! I guess they are putting a lot of value in the fact that it has original box and papers.

Usually that value is an extra $1k max for a full set over just a watch, unless it's a truly old or rare piece. This reference is neither of those things, and at $12k is way over-priced.

Agreed. Unless it's in NOS conditions. Otherwise shop around for more.
