FUMBLE....odd scenario. Wonder what the salesperson was thinking. Were they guessing that the customer was transgender or just an extremely poor choice of words.

Was the salesperson a native English speaker? If not, I can see this being an honest mistake.

I wouldn't have said either. If she picked up a YM2 and put it on i would of smiled and said it looks great. What a weird choice of words and a comment that didnt even need to be said. If the customer likes it than let the customer do what they want.

There are plenty of morons out there... here are four simple words that would have closed the sale...

"Wow. That looks great."

Thank you, thank you, I'll be here all week.

As an aside, I was in a new (to me) AD today. There were three or four smoken' hot beautiful sales women in the place, ranging from late twenties to their fifties. And a barely 20-something sales dude. Who comes over to the fifty-something middle aged guy wearing a Rolex to show him the watches? The sales dude.

That's an organization that doesn't understand the first thing about making a personal connection with their customers.

Maybe people are less prone to stereotype so broadly and often incorrectly in modern society as opposed to back in the good ol' days you may remember. Not every man is going to prefer to be helped by a woman. I tend to avoid it personally because I can relate more easily and often develop excellent rapport with most salesman, being a salesman myself.

The good old days, lol. That made me feel old. Lol. Good sales people do stereotype - not in the negative sense, and never anywhere but in their own mind, as the story in this thread illustrates. My point is that sales people always need to mentally size up their opportunities and make smart decisions that lead to a sale.

I'm sure that sales dude would have done super well (I'm being gracious) with some dude his own age, someone more modern and closer too his age. Yet there is a reason most ADs are staffed with beautiful women. Imho, of course.

Ultimately it cost 'em a sale. And while I don't have to be pandered to and feel the need for an obsequious sales rep, I do need to be sold. Also a lifelong sales professional.

I'd wager the salesperson doesn't even know what transgender means. I can't imagine any sales conversation context that would invoke using the term. Clearly the shopper took it as an insult.

Perhaps the key is avoiding the use of certain descriptive adjectives that can either be misinterpreted or misconstrued.

Had he said, "It's a very popular [minus the adjective] style" he might have still had a prospective customer.

Nobody who understands selling would say that. How can any AD have someone on staff and unsupervised with no class?

What he could have said was, "It's a very popular unisex style." as his lack of proper wording ended-up costing him a potential sale.
wow- someone really "blew" it. I don't get it.

You hit this one on the head -- you're exactly right! I'm sure the salesperson learned a valuable lesson.

You seem to have a thing about transgender people. A few months back we removed a thread you started about children and Transgender toilets, then sometime after that you posted this comment in another thread: https://www.rolexforums.com/showpost...4&postcount=17

This latest AD encounter, like many of your tales, seems highly unlikely to me.

I recall that particular deleted OP. It was about having to accompany my young daughter to a public restroom that was non-gender specific (as per the new laws) and she questioned me about an individual using the facilities.

That and the link you provided were just commentaries relating to the changing social climate. As far as transgender folks are concerned, I have no issue with them. To each his/her own.

On the other hand, some people attach a stigma to certain things which might explain why this particular customer was offended. Nowadays, many contemporary issues and scenarios come with built-in sensitivities all their own and it's getting harder to speak more freely on certain ones.

Which is OK with me. Maybe someday it will lead to a politer world.
