Scratched bezel on steel Nautilus question

I just noticed that I have a VERY small scratch in the flat part (top) of the bezel on my Nautilus 5712A (but the scratch goes across the grain of the metal so it is noticeable to the naked eye if the watch is fingerprint-free and catches the light in a certain way (and not otherwise). I've had the watch for 7 months. Two questions:

1) Should I be thrilled that I only have one VERY small scratch after 7 months, or dismayed that it is scratched at all?

2) When I have it serviced down the road, should I ask that they polish it, or not touch it?

p.s. I wear the watch about 4-6 days a week so I am sure there will be other scratches at some point down the line...

DONT TOUCH IT. A light scratch that can only be seen in certain angles is no big deal. Enjoy it my friend

i agree with the above generally. However im getting mine polished at servicing, the bezel for sure. Maybe id have them not touch the case though. Personal preference.

You are a few years out from that though.

Agree not to polish it. No matter how careful you are, you are going to scratch it.

I have three marks on my bezel in 2 years, and that is with careful selective wear. I would only get it polished when I send it in for work.

the no polish ever argument just went out the window on this one.

It doesnt look terrible, but if it was permanently like that i would struggle. With a polish at least there is hope of getting a new watch back again so you can then do that all over again.

To each his own. The vintage guy in me loves that honest wear. I can appreciate both sides though as my modern pieces are kept mint....but I'd never voluntarily polish anything.

Agreed wholeheartedly about the vintage vibes. I can see myself embracing the wear on a new piece after awhile.

it’s kind of it’s own character now... to polish it back to an “every mans “ nautilus would take it all away...

The watch is not mine, it belongs to a friend, who wears it under all circumstances. Had the pleasure of handling it last week. I posted it largely to make the OP feel better about his scratch (by comparison)

Mine on the left (also Tiffany, but no scratches (yet))

That’s really my question. Do you have them polish it when you have it serviced,

Have you had it polished before and gotten it back yet? If so, how did it look when you got it back?

Sorry I don't have a PP but I try to relate on Rolex DJ with fluted bezel.

Sent to RSC for service and polishing job, come back like showroom new...however I can clearly noticed the fluted bezel is not as sharp as before.

polishing do take out a certain amount of metal might NOT be too visible on flat surface bezel like 5711.

If you can ask them to polish only the flat surface then I will do it.

If they need to polish all the bezel then don't do it.

If you just want a polishing job, check out LA Watchworks. They are true artists, and work on Pateks. No need to wait for service. This isn’t to ignite the polish vs no polish argument, but if you want a freshen up, you have options.

I LOVE this. Not just the added T...but the overall appearance of a watch that has been worn and not babied.

Maybe thats just me but it has character :-)

Exactly, plenty of "character" here! After a certain point, just let it rip and enjoy the scares as a medal of well timed years.

I have always wondered, can the bezel on a Nautilus, like the AP Royal Oak, be replaced? Or it's integrated with the case?

Exactly! The Aqua And Naut have bezels that scratch easily. Do some more, wear with pride. You only have one scratch in seven months??? Impressive, unless she is a safe queen.

I know on the AP it can be replaced when I asked their watchmaker. It’s not going to be cheap though, that’s why they advise 3-4 polishing before a full replacement

its a separate part so i would assume so. Ideally thats my plan when it comes to polishing, just polish the bezel at regular servicing intervals and leave the case alone. I could deal with replacing the bezel, but wouldn't want to replace the case. Would love confirmation though that they will do that.

AFAIK the bezel and case are matched together in the final stage of case production so they not just take a spare bezel of the shelf if it needs to be replaced .
