TT vs Bi-Metal

I know that for some here the notion of purchasing a TT SS/YG or SS/RG watch isn't appealing due to it only being made partly of 18kt gold.

The argument being that a TT buyer "can't" afford a full gold version so is "compensating" by getting a model with as much gold as possible.

But, I really really find TT watches attractive. The white metal vs the yellow/rose gold metal....color wise....in of itself....just works beautifully.

I am a 70s child and a lot of TT were available.

When I look at some current Rolex TT models:

TT YG/SS Blue Sub
TT RG/SS Blue YM2
TT RG/SS Chocolate YM2

The color combinations of the models above...the colors of the various metals....silver/white for the SS part when paired with the yellow or rose gold of the second metal.....that bi metal look....that TT look....I just find incredibly satisfying and really attractive.

I was wondering for those in the group of "solid gold" or "ss"...if the TT models were actually 100% gold.....ie....WG/YG TT or WG/RG TT...as opposed to SS for the white metal......would that fact change your opinion...since its now a solid gold watch....just 2 different colors of gold?

OR do you not like the actual 2 colors combined in the watch?

Thanks.

I think the general aversion to TT is that many people don’t like yellow gold watches at all. I think that for a dress watch the TT can be very elegant. TT seems more “bling” than a solid yellow gold version because it catches the eye by throwing more light. The new TT Skydweller is a very sharp looking watch.

I love TT now, hated them at the beginning, for a short while. The models you've mentioned, plus the TT DJ, is what changed my heart. I guess i didn't like them at first because i didn't get to see a combination i would like. I am also for the SS/YG combo, as steel is a bit more neutral than WG, but guess WG/YG would also work great. I assume the majority wants the contrast, so no real need to make a PM TT . At that price point, many will swing for a full wg or yg option.

I think this is pretty true for a lot of people. I have no interest in yellow gold on my watch or even on my wedding band. However, I am developing a fondness the the TT with rose gold combination. This particular DJ looks amazing in my opinion. The rose gold is so much more subtle and pleasing to the eye than yellow.

To me it's simply about the looks. If I ever bought a gold watch, (which I wouldn't, because I don't like the weight,) I'd buy it in white gold.

There's nothing wrong with TT watches and they're no reflection on the solvency of the owner.

Two-tone things, from cars to watches to shoes and houses, have been popular forever.

I personally don't own any TT watches, but I do admire them.

I do like yellow gold, though.

I really like TT watches and own a 16803. I think it looks classy, and as it's my watch, that's all that's important to me.

Get ready..any time you post anything about two tone, the haters are going to start lining up...I can hear it now.

And it wouldn't matter what it was made out of, either.

I like two tone watches. The sub bluesy is one of my all time favorites.

I don’t mind TT watches in fact I find the 116681 one of the most stunning watches in the Rolex line. However I much prefer all gold.

I don't dislike TT's, but I don't foresee owning one. If I did it would be the RG/SS YM w/ chocolate dial... mostly for the dial.

No matter what you buy someone will make up a reason to snub you for it. So lose that feeling and choose to be happy with what you like.

For me, I’m not a fan of yellow metals. But I LOVE blue dials. So the 5-digit TT Bluesy is what I ended up with. Not too much gold color, but a beautiful now-violet dial.

TT vs Bi-Metal

Buy what YOU like — and don’t let anyone talk you out of it!

I enjoy wearing TT watches - the bluesy is one of my all time favorites - which in my mind you can’t go wrong with.

It all boils down to individual tastes.

As far as the 116613 goes, I do find it somewhat ‘flashier’ than the 116618 model — mainly due to the metal contrast...but that has never stopped me from wearing one!!

I'm colour blind so I don't discriminate on metal colour, I just buy what I like.

Those really are very rare in the wild not to mention on here. Only time I ever saw one was in N Palm beach Fl last year a guy was putting gas in his car. It was beautiful from about 10’ or so. Palm beach Co and Jupiter are full of Rolex wearers but mostly DD’s and all Gold Subs.

I love my 116613lb

I bought it because I love how it looks. If the stainless was swapped for white gold, I would still love it, because give or take, it would look the same.

If this was the case, I wouldn't have bought it yet, but would want one for sure! It would be one of my grails.

I also want to add, the two-tone, rose gold and steel, Datejust 41 is wooooooooooo baby... GORGEOUS

The most popular and biggest selling Rolex on the planet is the TT Datejust.

I've admired two tone Rolex watches ever since I bought my first Rolex, a two tone Datejust. It never even occurred to me that it was created for people who "couldn't afford" a gold watch until I read that somewhere here on TRF. I think it's a silly notion.

Very good question that I think would help people reexamine their feelings about TT. For me, yes I'd want that TT watch even more if the white metal was in white gold!

There is some on this forum that dislike TT but, it really doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks. It only matters what you think. My first Rolex as a TT Smurf. I, like you, heard the “disdain” from some. On reflection,I don’t really think it was disdain. I think that some simply don’t like TT, some simply can’t afford it, and some have moved on to full PM.

I’m in the last category. I ended up flipping my TT Smurf, not because I “hated” it, because I started with the TT Sub and ended with a TT Sub, a YG Sub, a ND Sub, a LV Sub and ......

I decided to let the TT Sub go. I still think the TT Smurf is the best looking Rolex and sometimes regret the sale.

until I got one

No one will notice a regular sub on your wrist, but they might notice the TT.

I like TT watches due to few reasons. First steel and gold combination really attracts eye as there is color contrast. When i bough my T DJII i did not know that bracelet middle links are made from 18K gold... i thought that they are gold plated.

Looking from price point of view TT watches are only slightly more expensive than SS watches. In case of new Daytona-C, SS watch real market price is even higher than TT Daytona. Full gold watches are completely different league and cost much more. However, if you compare from production cost perspective customers very significantly overpaying for prestige to have a full gold watch.

Accordingly, in my perspective TT watches are the best deal for consumers - they are more affordable fro general public and look very nice.

I am one of those rare people that appreciates most of the offerings. I think some look better in TT than others. I also think the DD in all YG is one of the most beautiful Rolexes ever made. On the other hand I really dont care for the all gold Daytonas except on strap. The TT DJ in RG is also awesome! One other point, I have found that many times a watch is more appealing in person than in a pic.
