Icon4 Scott Kelly Spent a Year in Space, and Now He Has Different DNA Than His Twin Brother

Space freakishness!

A new NASA statement suggests the physical and mental stresses of Scott Kelly's year in orbit may have activated hundreds of "space genes" that altered the astronaut's immune system, bone formation, eyesight and other bodily processes. While most of these genetic changes reverted to normal following Scott Kelly's return to Earth, about 7 percent of the astronaut's genetic code remained altered — and it may stay that way permanently.

Amazing. Thanks CJ.

We'll have to wait for testing results:
"More than 200 researchers in 30 states are helping to analyze the Kelly brothers' various test results, looking for space-induced changes in Scott Kelly's cognition, metabolism, microbiome and many other physiological processes. NASA will publish the comprehensive findings of these tests in a single study later this year."

Next time I'm off to space for a year, I'll remember this.

I read his book "Endurance: A Year In Space, A Lifetime Of Discovery." It really gives a gritty picture of life in space. Stinky air, high CO2 levels, hygiene challenges, boredom, unending work schedules, loneliness and personality challenges. These astronauts are incredibly stable mentally.

He also said he never saw anything akin to an alien while up there. He wasn’t very convincing..

I'm guessing that with 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 planets orbiting 70 billion trillion stars in our universe, one of an infinite number of universes, and the components of life present throughout the universe, I'm guessing there is nothing special enough about planet Earth to justify a mission from elsewhere to check us out.

Akin to life on a WWII submarine. But oh, the glamour.

The lasting changes to DNA (albeit just 7% of genes) challenges some long-held beliefs in anthropology, biology and zoolology that changes in DNA take a very long time - centuries for example.

Although the article mentions stress-induced changes - maybe it was the greater number of quarks, leptons, muons, neutrinos and their particle ilk bombarding the ISS.

NASA has known for some time that astronauts are exposed to higher levels of ionizing radiation in extended duration spaceflight. There is quite a bit of study on it. And in context of the extensive research in spaceflight carcinogenesis, I doubt anyone is surprised by this report.

Unless the effects of deep space radiation exposure can be mediated, human travel to Mars or beyond will mean almost certain death. While we may have the mechanical means to get there, shielding the travelers from radiation remains problematic.
