Announcement: New Online Map
In the bottom left hand corner, you will see a little map.
If you click once on this it will take you to another page showing a map which if you put your cursor over you can see the locations of various visitors to the forum now online. I hope it provides a little fun

Geez your quick toph
Yes, it updates every few seconds, and shows both logged in users and visitors. It does have limited usefulness, but it is interesting to see where people on the forum are situated.

Pretty neat, Steve. Question: Does this inidicate active members or guests or everyone who is currently visiting the site?
I know we have more members on line right now than there are stars on the map. Oops, you answered my question. I guess I was still hunting and pecking out my post while you were responding to Chris. So, never mind.

O.K. let me try and explain what I believe
The map only shows the stars of who has clicked or refreshed a page in the preceding 60 seconds. So if you have been looking at a page for more than 60 seconds then you will not be shown as a yellow star. The map therefore shows how many pages from people around the world have been refreshed in the last 60 seconds, so this updates all the time. If you look below the map (on the large map) you will see the various pages and the countries who have clicked on the various pages (from this site) in the last 30 seconds. There are 3 tabs and you can see other things. As I said it is more a matter of interest and fits in neatly to the bottom left hand corner. Thanks to Paul (Welshwatchman) who brought this little Wiget to my attention

The graphic tab doesn't seem to be working. When I click on the various options (5 yr, 1 yr, etc), it says loading, but then nothing happens. Do we have a small glitch here?

No I don't think there is a problem, we just don't have enough time up to be able to qualify for a graphic.
You can't build a graphic in 20 minutes, it takes weeks or months Seeshaaa you guys don't expect much

Hey, this place has been up and running for over 3 years. Whatsa matter, they can't make it retroactive? Damn cheap software engineers.

Pretty neat! Does it just see where the IP addresses are pinging from?

Yes, I think that is correct, it just gives a pictorial depiction in the form of a map.

Cool! I guess almost everyone is using an LCD monitor. Otherwise we might need to chop off a bit from the right side of the map to prevent burn in of the monitor from a constant image.

Cool! Anyway to make it a little bigger without clicking on it? Also, what is the significance of the pulsing locations? (newest logins?)

Sorry, I can't make it bigger without clicking on it, as it would not fit into the symmetry of the forum layout. Also if I did make it bigger, the amount of stars appearing would not likely give the user any greater information without making the map really big (which occurs when you click on the map, and then again when you get to the map site).
The pulsing locations just mean an activity occuring (making a post) by a person in that location in the preceding 30 seconds.

What an awesome feature. We've got an American serviceman or woman on right now off of the coast of Africa. I am imagining a marine or sailor in a Carrier Group experiencing flight ops at sea. I pray our soldiers stay out of harms way this AM.
Nice to see how our little hobby knows few boundaries and joins us for a common love. Thanks Steve. Terry Newton

I noticed the military user's "star" off of the western coast of Africa, too. Very cool.
What a great tool! It is interesting to see the cluster of users too--there seem to be more on the Eastern Coast of the US than the Western Coast. Since it seems to follow IP addresses...what if you access TRF from a cruise ship in the middle of the ocean? It would be interesting to see how that comes up. So, any TRFer going on a cruise, it is your mission to check out the internet cafe on board. |

Hey, that is pretty neat. The Global appeal of the forum is amazing. Nice to have so much in common with people from around the world. I saw a post the other day from Pakistan. Thought that was so cool. Thanks,

The stats map may be interfering with the smooth functioning of the forum software.
I have disabled it while tests are being performed to see if it is/has had any effect. Thank you for your patience. The stats map is a third party application, so we need to be sure it is not going to cause any problems with the forum functionality. Some have reported some difficulties recently with functionality, so we have to take some steps to identify the issue/s. Thank you for your patience during this difficult time and I apologise for any inconvenience experienced.

At the moment I'm trying to implement a new colour scheme called "RolexGreen".
You can try it out by selecting the colour box option at the bottom of the page. It is still a work in progress, and you can go back to the usual colour as you wish.

Me too. My in laws are going on a cruise soon...it would be cool to see if they accessed this website from the ship's internet room, and I could track their progress on the trip!

I'm sorry but the map was playing havoc with the loading of pages on the internet.
Everytime someone loaded a page it was an extra message/signal to that third party web-site and it just wasn't working smoothly, so although yes it was cool to see those little dots on the map, it did come at a price of reduced overall functionality of the forum.
