Jaeger Atmos

So, after visiting just about every watch store in Las Vegas, I think I found my next purchase.
I saw plenty of beautiful watches & was tempted by many of them. ( especially when one Panerai AD had my 98 in stock with a very low number ( single digit).
The one both my wife & I fell in love with is the JLC Atmos Classique Phases de Lune.
I cannot provide a link to the exact spot on the website, but here is the start.
http://www.jaeger-lecoultre.com/
Then go to Atmos, under Collection.
This is a cool clock. Using changing temperatures ( only 1 degree) will keep the clock fully wound & operational. They call it "almost perpetual"
The lunar phase only needs adjusting once ever 3,821 years ( by then it will be out of sync by one full day )
Luckily I know my local AD's phone number by heart ( who just so happens to also be my Panerai AD ). The Canadian pricing was very similar to the US converted price, so I think this will end up being our anniversary present to each other this year.

Wow! Pretty amazing, Johnny Gee, I wonder if Rolex makes something like that, you know, them being the best and all

That would make a great anniversary addition

The ATMOS is a type of clock manufactured by Jaeger LeCoultre in Switzerland.
Inside a hermetically sealed capsule is a mixture of gas and liquid (ethyl chloride) which expands as the temperature rises in the expansion chamber, which then compresses a spiral spring, with a fall in temperature the gas condenses and the spring slackens. This motion constantly winds the mainspring, a variation in temperature of only one degree in the range between 15 and 30 degrees Celsius being sufficient for two days' operation.
To convert this small amount of energy into motion, everything inside the Atmos has to work as friction-free as possible. The balance, for example, executes only two torsional oscillations per minute, which is 150 times slower that the pendulum in a conventional clock.
In 1928 a Neuchatel engineer called Jean-Leon Reutter built a clock driven by a mercury in glass expansion device which rotated a cylinder which wound the mainspring by ratchet. The mechanism operated on temperature change only. But it took the Jaeger-LeCoultre workshop a few more years to convert this idea into a technical form that could be patented.

Very 'cool' clock (pun intended).

Have you been building rockets in the back yard again?

Seriously, pretty impressive, Fransie

Where's Lol-x? He just got his Atmos last week, and I'm still waiting to see photos!

Then again, I could just pop into his office and see the real thing, I suppose.

My AD just called. Jaeger Canada has one in Toronto. Should be shipped out this week.
We are already clearing a place on the fireplace mantle for this one.
Pictures will be sure to follow.

That's always been one of my favourite clocks. I've promised myself one when I finally return to the UK.

Went through the whole link once again, John. The step by step explanation of the making of a JLC is very absorbing and makes for some superb viewing!! Thanks once again for an extraordinary link, pal!!

Huge congrats John! I love the Atmos clocks and am really hoping to own one some day. Right now I have some other priorities, but one day I will have one.

Stunning choice, and I look forward to the pictures!

Just got my Atmos last week.

It came new in the box with manual, guarantee and everything.

Can't complain for US$1,580-. Now I guess I'll just wait 30 years for it to be due for it's first service (cleaning only as the clock would not work if lubricants were used, they would add drag and collect dirt).

Sorry about the finger prints and dust, just a happy snap for your interest.

Cheers

That is a beauty, if I don't say so myself
We decided to go for the similar model, same colour , but with the lunar phase & calendar.

Congrats, Lol-x, that's a beauty. Would you consider wearing it on your wrist sometimes?

Love the Atmos as a sculptural time piece. Congrats to both of you on great purchases. Now these clocks can be passed down to generations who will have long forgotten who the original owners were. Think of that one.

You never own an Atmos... you're mearly the timekeeper until it's passed on to the next generation.
