Took a trip to San Francisco.. what happened to this place?

My friends and I took a trip to wonderful San Francisco. I went when 10 years ago when I was 15 with my parents and did all the touristy stuff like Alcatraz, Fisherman’s Wharf, The Presidio and The Embarcadero. I might not have been looking around too much but the city seemed clean, friendly and beautiful

Fast forward to last week, I couldn’t believe my eyes. There were homeless people EVERYWHERE. Smoking their stuff, shooting up in broad daylight, standing in groups of 10 or more, tents on every street and under every bridge.. the list goes on. Was it always like this? I’ve read that the local govt treats them very well.. all subsidized by the taxpayers. It couldn’t have always been like this, or could it? Maybe I’m too used to NYC where the homeless population seems under control for the most part

My recent experience in SF was similar. I will not go back.
On the positive side your watch looks good!

Yup, hate to sound like a broken record, but I’ve been saying this for years.

I don’t know how anybody can pretend SF is like most cities. It’s not. It has been going downhill for a long time. It sucks because I grew up absolutely loving the city. Such an amazing place before.

From that first pic, I thought your sleeve has frayed on the bottom.

But yes, homeless are everywhere these days. I live close to Santa Monica and now we have this Metro light rail going through, they are everywhere.

Yep. It is definitely not like other cities by any means. Most cities won't give that a free pass.

Excellent restaurants, great views, good music and arts scene, other than that it’s a sewer. Lived in the Bay Area on and off since the mid seventies, Berkeley, Oakland, and SF are filthy and crime ridden, the homeless and fecal matter are everywhere. Almost forgot, car break ins and shoplifting are more or less tolerated, no police response because they’re too busy checking the addicts to see if they’ve overdosed.

I heard they have an app for reporting this so you can avoid it. I know snapchat has been working on it also. Pretty sad for such a beautiful city https://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/artic...t-13281837.php

You might be right, but as an outsider who goes to NYC ever year I do not see it as being under control.

We were there last spring. This is as close as we got. Read too much about the issues to want to go see it up close.

Being a small town Georgia boy, I am not super comfortable in San Francisco. I spend a lot of time in ATL and perhaps it is the places I visit in the city, but you don’t see many homeless people. Also, it is easy to avoid the bad parts of town. San Francisco just seems different. No clear dividing lines. Homeless people in all the parks and mingling with the tourist.

We love visiting Napa and we normally spend a few days and nights in San Francisco. Long story short, the SF stays are getting shorter and shorter. Also, we walk less. Uber to our destination and Uber back to the hotel.

Agreed it was prob like that long ago but now more in your face. NYC also is worse compared to before. The same problems are there but the homeless, trash, human waste is definitely more in your face. Ny continues to to have a decreasing population, I think last year was like 64-66k

I could answer your question with one word, but several head explosions and my potential banning would soon follow. In fifteen more years, the comparison differential will be worse.

Agree. Most major cities do NOT have the same problem. I have visited quit a few major cities over the last few years and have not seen what is going on in SF or even close.

My last experience in SF wasn't a good one, very hard to figure out how SF turned out like this.

I visited there last May and was shocked that we had to watch our step for human excrement in some areas. Visiting every 3-5 years, I have definitely seen it deteriorate over the last 10 years. Don't plan to return anytime soon.

And now for some recommendations. Food in SF, all these are excellent. Monsieur Benjamin, Rintaro, Union Larder, Italian Homemade, Saru, Verjus, Terroir, Akiko. In Berkeley, Cesar, Chez Panisse, Great China, Corso. In Oakland for lunch Cam Huong and Pho Vy. And south of SF in Burlingame is my AD, Kern Jewelers. And don’t forget they’re not homeless they’re unsheltered. That’s how SF got to this point.

No, they really don't. Open drug use and junkies laying out in the middle of public in large numbers does not happen in cities of similar size and profile.

The drug problem is BAD, sugar coating it or pretending it's normal is a disservice to everyone.

They have official "Poop Patrol" employees, its that bad.

It’s the left coast. Far left coast. I’m not proud of it, but there’s your answer.

I work downtown and it's pretty bad. The homeless problem is a big problem. I have to keep an eye where I step to avoid feces. That's how bad it is.
Imagine having to watch where you walk. It's that bad.

I have never come across such rude, aggressive and pushy homeless people anyway else in my travels across the world and the US than the homeless people that we came across in San Francisco. Your watch is awesome. Nice!
