First Patek

I'm looking at getting my first Patek and am unsure what model to go with.
I want a dress watch to wear on formal occasions and not something I'd wear everyday. With that being said, I'd want something more for a long term investment (or atleast that would relatively hold its value). I'm open to either buying new or buying second hand. My preferences would be to have a rose gold model and the calatrava cross deployment buckle with a brown strap. I'm also not a fan of the Calatrava line as I find the dials to be too plain. I've been looking at the 5146R but have seen alot of people saying the AC models are horrible investments.
I'd like to keep the price around $30k, but it's not a firm cap and would be more than happy to spend more to get the perfect watch. Thanks for your help everyone!

For your criteria, I'd probably opt for a 3940.

A World Time 5130 or 5110 series may be your best option.

I've been really digging the older world timers recently. Who knows what the future value holds.

All good suggestions so far. I have and love a 3940, had and regret selling a 5110, and may one day try to get a 5196p.

A frequent seller on TRF has a Rose Gold 5396 with Breguet numerals and deployant clasp listed for sale at around $36k. The Breguet numbers enhance the Calatrava's looks IMO. A 5196P at $25K+ is also a great dress option for infrequent wear.

5196 second hand or grey should hold its value... and pocket the rest.

I just picked up a preowned 5296 in rosegold, and I can't believe how beautiful it is. You should look at it in person. The going FMV is around $20k-25k.

I disagree that the annual calendars are bad investments. I wore mine for several years and sold it for thousands of dollars more than I paid for it. It is a great watch. The 3940 perpetual calendar is a great watch as a dress watch. It is small at 37 mm and does not have any Lume, like the annual calendar does.

As to resell value, Patek goes up over time. Who knows what the future holds?

I had a similar dilemma. Opted for the 5146G. Cream dial.
I’ve not taken it off in three weeks now. Wears great with dress clothes and also with jeans.
Love, love, love it.
