Definitely not a day of celebration...but rather a day of reflection and remembrance.

I think memorializing those who fell in combat has changed over the 150+ years since the first Decoration Day.
In the beginning it was definitely a ceremony where the graves were decorated with flowers, etc. It was a time to come together to honor the sacrifice rendered by (at first) Confederate soldiers and later in separate ceremonies by the Union forces - but on different dates. Ultimately a National day was chosen for all our valiant fallen after WWI - May 30th, no matter what day of the week upon which it landed. That is, until 1968 when Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which established Memorial Day as the last Monday in May. This was in order to create a three-day weekend for federal employees for this holiday as well as many others. That change went into effect in 1971. I think that became the genesis of the partying and the confusion of the original intention to remember all who fell in the service of our Country. Retailers and organizers contribute to the dilution with Memorial Day Sales, Sizzling Summer Blowouts. Sadly most kids born after 1970 only know it as the first day the community pool opens its gates. The men and women who no longer walk among us because they defended our Country from enemies, both foreign and domestic, deserve better... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

It's unfortunate that, for some people, their first thought is about which Electronics or Furniture store is having a sale this weekend.

Thanks for the reminder of the real reason for the holiday. It gets lost in translation with all the sales and BBQs this weekend. It’s really a disservice to those who sacrificed for us all.

Our Family always remembers the reason for Memorial day. My wife's father retired Navy, Korea era. My wife and I both retired Navy, our daughter served 4 years in the Navy. My brother and my wife's brother both served 8 years in the Navy.
My wife is the Finance officer in our AmVet post. We are both very active in the post. She gives the Memorial day speech and the Veterans day speech at the County Court house every year for the past 6 years. |

Amen Brothers. Long family history of service, combat duty and sacrifice. Not me but my Dad, both Grandfathers and some uncles. Brings a tear to my eye when I see Arlington. Nothing earns more respect than those who serve and served and those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for me to have freedom! Chokes my up but re emphasizes how grateful I am.

Sure do, it’s in my: “I love me box” with the medals, ribbons, wings, a couple pictures of me along with my original military ID and Pilot’s license.... I think those two are written on parchment....

Senior Enlisted actually run the military... Yeah, the Admirals and Generals THINK they do... but really it’s the senior enlisted. I found this pic, probably 1987/8(?). The PC (Plane Captain is an E-8, a Senior Chief Petty Officer is telling me: “Sir, while you’re flying that jet she is yours, all yours. BUT, when she’s on the ground, she belongs to me!”
You know what? He was right. |

This is a thread about Memorial Day. Not Veteran’s Day.
Thank you Tim for starting the thread about those who gave the ultimate sacrifice so we can enjoy our freedoms

I think it should be ok for all veterans on TRF to post and bond on Memorial Day weekend, as well as any day. We all have and share the reverence of the moment
