Seiko Ownership Experience? Any Quality Issues?

That is outstanding, seiko rates it +/- 35-45 seconds a day. You got very lucky with your movement

Honest question; Have you owned a Seiko, or do you discount them based on specs that you read?

Yes. A presage open heart and a prospex samurai, both given to my brother. And I do believe both those watches are good for the price point. I am not trying to start an argument but they are the specs of both watches.

No. You didn't say the 4R movement is specified to that accuracy. You said "prospex and presage are..." Your argument is false. You are taking the movement that is in the base models like a $400 turtle and applying it to the whole range of models. My LX is specified to +/- 10 seconds a month. I'm gonna go ahead and say all prospex and presage are specified to that accuracy. Same argument made by you.

And if you don't know enough about Seiko to know that there are different movements in different models as you go higher in quality/price, you really shouldn't be commenting here and should go back to the Rolex forum to talk about watches as investments and wait times.

I have a SBP077 which I’ve worn daily for the past month. It’s been running -2 a day with weekly winding. Awesome watches at a very attractive price point.

SRPC39, a $400 watch (that I paid under $300 for) running at -1.7 s/day for the month. Insane for the price point.

I'm just saying the printed specs of my watch is also what you claim...but it's nowhere close to that. It's much more accurate... If you have had accuracy closer to the rated specs, you have been unlucky. I think many here are claiming much more accurate than the printed specs. Seiko is probaly just being conservative with their specs.

Thank you Jamie. I used to be worried about accuracy, it became a bit of an obsession. I then realised that I have never, ever been classed as early or late by 45 seconds in my life.

Like anything mechanical, there are variations in performance. I want to love Seiko, but the last two I had both were terrible for keeping time. The last one I bought was a JDM Cocktail Time when it first came out and it would lose around 5 minutes a day or more after short while (few months). So 0 for 2 and I’ve not bought any since. As a kid I had what I thought were great Seikos, but of course I wasn’t aware or cared much about accuracy. I do wish I still had those but they’d probably just be a disappointment to me now. I think I’ll just be happy with my memories of them.

Don’t like to hear this at all. I do have a question: did you try to address a still under warranty watch that was losing five minutes a day with Seiko?

I've got three, 007j, 009, and SARB033.

The 007j went well enough for years, always ran slow but just the tolerable side of annoying, now I think it's magnetised. Runs way too fast and against the ear has a rather ill-sounding tick.

The 009 is quite accurate but of the three has been used the least.

The SARB033 died outright on my wrist after about 3 months for no reason. Sent in to seiko and after some hassle it was handled under warranty. Returned to me with new movement (6R15d). Initially was dead-on accurate but that was a year ago and currently it's losing 3 minutes a day and getting slower all the time. Very annoying. This is on-wrist 100% of time for the last year. Not mistreated but not babied, and I don't have a desk job.

Tried to have the SARB regulated a couple weeks ago by a very well reviewed watch repair in NYC and he said he couldn't do it. I said "you've got a timegrapher right there," and pointed to it behind him.

Anyway, so I can't say "no issues" with seiko. But the thing is still on my wrist as I type this, mostly for lacking other option right now.

This Seiko Kinetic has been with me for at least 18 years. Never service, never change any component inside and it is still working fine today.

Msgsooner: since I bought it from out of Japan, I didn’t really feel a burning desire to try to send it back there to have it corrected, or try to do so here in the States. I just chalked it up to having gotten one of the occasional “misses” and knew I took a chance buying that way, and moved on. If it had been a Grand Seiko I bought from a dealer or boutique here, I would have sent it in for warranty work.
