When I bought mine I was wearing my Heuer, which the salesperson recognized. I was wearing jeans and t-shirt and flip-flops! I think it helped that I was already wearing a known brand.

I have bought watches from an AD wearing everything from surf shorts and a t-shirt to USMC Dress Blues.
I can tell you that NOTHING gets you service in an AD quite like a set of USMC Dress Blues.
In fact, I got a dinner date out of the deal also!
