Icon20 Movement?

Hi Guys, I have a year 2000 14000 AK (pitured above!) and I wondered if this model has a 3000 movement? Also, whether this same movement would have been the same in Explorer 1's and non-date Sub's produced in the same year. Appreciate any info. you can give.

If the model number is 14000 it has a 3000... If it's a 14000M it's a 3130. The year 2000 was the changeover so it could be either but the letter M will tell you for sure. Should be on the paperwork.

As of yesterday, I am a pleased owner of a 5500 (6 mil serial) from 1980. Sorry about the lousy pic. The dial is a champagne color with faded brown tritium markers. It is especially attractive in the sunlight (but aren't all Rolexes?)

This is the third Rolex that I have owned, and this one is a keeper for me. I once had an "A" serial Sea-Dweller and a '64 Oysterdate, and I regret selling them both. I've learned that I can never really part with a Rolex without feeling remorse, so the 5500 will follow me to the grave.

Does anyone else have a 5500 from this period with a dial like this that lacks the "Precision" on the bottom?

After wearing a PAM 183 for years, among other over-sized models, it is fun to wear the 5500. To have a Rolex again after many years is lovely. It is a reminder of everything I adore about Rolex: rugged dependability, subtle elegance, and timeless design.

Here's to great watches and even better health . . .

Looks good! Most but not all 5500s have the Precision writing. Mine doesn't, but it has a giant P logo instead. (see avatar)

According to the AD service department near by, my 116000 is an Air King; I'm wondering what they're smoking. The shipping info on the watch to RSC attests to this. Sorry for the side track. ;) That must make me an honorary member.

The reference for the AirKing supercase is 1142XX and not 116000. Wrong size and wrong model. Oh well, most dealers haven't a clue anyway. Nice OP though.

On the topic of 5500s sans Precision, for a little while Rolex simply didn't add it. I have a feeling it has to do with a few different versions of the 1520 movement being in use and it likely denotes a variation. No real-world difference though.

First Rolex. Should be an Air-King?

I have been shopping for a few months for my first Rolex watch. Should it be an Air-King? I have tried on many models of different sizes and have not found anything that I like more than the Air-King 114200 with the white dial and the black 3-6-9. I love the watch's simplicity and the terrific contrast of the black against the white dial. I love the lume too. The lower price is just an added bonus! I also like the 39 mm Explorer, but the contrast of the 3-6-9 is not good. The silver just gets lost against the black.

So I guess my question is: fluted bezel or not?

The fluted bezel is a ref 114234 and has been discontinued. The smooth bezel is the ref 114200. Both are fantastic. That dial is sublime!

I'd have a hell of a time deciding which one I'd choose myself. You really can't go wrong with either

Air-King

I posted pics and both are fluted. Here are the correct ones. So the question is fluted or not fluted?

I think I am going with the smooth one. I love the fluted bezel but is it really worth paying an extra $1150? I'd rather use that to buy an Explorer or Datejust.

Are we going bigger? Does anyone think that Rolex will increase the Air-King to 36mm? I know we have the 36mm "No Date," which is an orphan child with no real name and has very limited choices. That would make the Air-King the same size of the DateJust. I read somewhere that internally Rolex employees refer to the "Air-King" as the "Air-Queen" because few men buy them anymore.

I just was thinking about a thread for the OPs (No Dates) and was trying to think of what to call them. There are a lot of models under the OP moniker but only a small subset are no dates and can truly carry the mark without added description. I don't believe many guys buy 36mm anymore either. Here's another shameless incursion into this thread.

Makes no sense to increase the size of the AK
