This is one of the most interesting threads I've read in while. Tom kept his cool during this whole ordeal... The definition of a true gentlemen.

Update.
Those of you waiting for a pic, sadly you will be disappointed. Not more than me maybe but disappointed. I went down a half hour early and waited. Right on time at 1:00 I met with the detectives. They confirmed with all the items I brought, box, papers, tags, FedEx documents that the watch was mine. They did not have the watch. It is still at the pawn shop. After confirming that I am the legitimate owner they are going to recontact the pawn shop and make an appointment for me to go and get my Daytona back. I then have to go to the pawn shop to get back my Daytona. Here is where it gets a bit tricky. They have to give it back to me per the detectives but they could play hardball and ask for me to pay them up to half of what they paid the thief. I found out how much they paid. 1,750,000 Japanese Yen. The thief made a killing! That is about $14,583.00. Now I could tell them no I won't pay and they can hang on to it maybe and then we all have to go to court for years. Per the detectives they are doing their best to see that I pay them nothing. If the pawn shop handles this politely and professionally I will reward them even though I don't have to. Also I found out that the pawn shop chain that I warned is not the pawn shop where the thief took the Daytona. He was smart enough to go way out into the countryside and pawn it at a different chain of pawn shops. The watch was pawned on Jan 5th. I made a police report January 1st to include the serial number. The police did not input the serial number into the system until January 8th which I guess in a way is lucky for me because if it had been in the system the pawn shop would not have taken it maybe? Once the pawn shop saw it in the system they contacted the police and reported that they had it. So kudos to them. The police then issued a "warrant" they referred to it as that ordered the pawn shop to hold it. That is all I can say on that right now. As far as the criminal side of the investigation I cannot comment anymore on that for now. They know who the guy is that pawned my watch and that is all I can say about that right now. The detectives will call me back and tell me when my appointment is with the pawn shop. Draining I know, but I am still feeling good and happy with this procedure. It is not my country and I have to do it their way. Which means patience and I can't go in the pawn shop and be a pissed off foreigner. I have to handle this right and it will all work out. I have supreme confidence in the detectives. That is all I have for now. The appointment with the pawn shop will be late this week or early next week. Thank you all for caring. |

I should also say that I am guessing that the Daytona is in good shape. They gave the guy what a grey dealer would have given me for it with box and papers. So it must not be damaged badly.
