I absolutely love the watch. I love the vintage characteristics. I love the dial. The silver background with the tricolor sub-dials just pops and is just beautiful to look at. I love the movement and the display of it on the back and I like that it has a date. I initially wanted a steel Daytona but I didn't want to play the AD games and market price is a bit out of reach for me. Plus, I wanted something different that would round out my collection and look good on a strap.

The El Primero's history is amazing. It was pipped to the line as the first automatic chronograph in 1969 and was tapped by Rolex to improve their flagging Daytona model. Then, during the quartz crisis, Zenith's American owners wanted to melt all of its chronograph machinery and sell it off as junk metal. One or two heroic individuals hid it away and that helped seed a turnaround in the brand's fortunes a decade or so later.

Zenith also makes a 42mm. Though, 38mm fit best on my 7" wrist. Also felt the 38mm dial has better proportions and is truer, in terms of dial and case, to the original EP.

Honestly, the only gripe I have with it is it doesn't hold value as well as a Daytona... I plan on keeping it forever but it's nice to know with Rolex your money is there in case of a catastrophe and you have to sell. But I purchased it gray at a nice discount so I think I made out OK. I plan to purchase a black alligator strap for it to dress it up a bit and give it a different look.

It's a DJII. Thanks for the details on the strap -- it's beautiful. The bracelet is nice. It has PCLs which makes it appear a bit blingy (I personally like it). It doesn't taper, so it's the same size throughout. The clasp is a butterfly and the bracelet wears a bit thinner/lighter than a Rolex oyster.

Prior to purchasing, I compared this bracelet a lot between my BLNRs oyster and the bracelet on the EP. I'll be honest, it's not as substantial as Rolex. The finish, heft, and clasp of Rolex oyster is unrivaled IMO. Not to say the EP bracelet isn't good quality... If you ever tried on an Omega Speedmaster, I felt the EP bracelet was much better than Omega's bracelet. The EP is just a level below the Rolex oyster IMO. I plan to purchase a black alligator for it. EP looks superb on a strap and you're right -- it's classic.

Your reasoning for purchasing the El Primero is exactly why I bought one. I got a killer a deal on it and have no regrets.

It's a great watch! I had one a couple years ago but sold it (regrettably).

I've been keeping an eye out for another at the right price and I wouldn't hesitate to add it back to the collection.

Here is mine, sorry for the low quality pic, I'll do better some other day. But it's my 12th Wedding Anniversary Today! Just got them out for a quick pic. I'm drinking Bourbon btw. Jim Beam FTW! LOL.

Side note, the Speedmaster was purchased by my wife on our 11th Anniversary, kind of fitting. Apollo 11.

Very cool

But also very sad that they’re not being worn

But hey your money. Do as you wish. Some people buy gold coins as investments ...some people buy watches :)

I know you are probably sick of this photo as I posted so many times, but down to these 2. Had many other brands I never wore. Going to build up from this base. Waiting for white dial Daytona ceramic. Thinking of the bluesy as well, not sure I would have 2 blue dials then, but really love it. Waiting to see if GMT comes out with a TT jubilee, would pull the trigger on that.

Before Quarantine:

After:

A lot of change happened during the quarantine and I’m happy about it. My career trajectory changed so the AK went towards the Reverso and BB58 as my more under the radar work watches since the thickness and top heavy-ness of the 116900 never clicked with me. The DD40 was too much value for a special occasion watch so it got traded in 4 watch bundle that got me the Hulk and Wimbledon along with another DJ41 and DJ31 for my in-laws. The CHNR was a pure luck find on display when I walked into the AD to get the strap buckle for the Tudor. Waiting on a vintage Cuervo y Sobrinos piece getting restored that I picked up during my research in Cuba a few years back to complete the 8 watches the box fits. Now I can just happily wait for my Daytona with the rest of you fine folks.

If you get a white dial Daytona, that would be the best 3 watch collection on TRF IMHO. I love your Datejust. I want one of those to go with my Sub and Speedmaster.

Thanks man really appreciate it! I have been building a thoughtful small collection. I miss the speedy, that would also add the crono to my collection. You have 2 iconic watches no doubt!

Thanks. I’m doing the same thing. Small thoughtful collection.

When I was a kid, I was a huge fan of early James Bond movies and the Apollo space program. So that was a huge factor in terms of what watches I want to own.

Now I want a blue dial Datejust, and then I’m done. That’s all I want and that’s all I need.

Interesting background, totally get it! The blue datejust 41, you will love it, great change up from the black dial. Every time I look down it is a different color, so cool. Are you on a waitlist?

Yes, I told a local AD I want one and to call me if one comes in. I might call a couple others in the area.
