What I’m selling is worth double and what I’m buying is worth half.

So it goes.

Nah, it’s pretty on par with what I expected. I certainly didn’t expect everyone to agree.

Sell and price it as you like but it doesn't mean it will be sold. At that price.

Don't, for one minute, think Patek doesn't care about how crazy things are getting in the grey market. It does, actually, tarnish their brand if people start to think you can't ever get a sports watch except by "getting ripped off" buy GM dealers (remember, the Nautilus and the Aquanaut were supposed to "conquest" watches to get new collectors hooked).

Threads like these always make me laugh. Rich guys complaining about the buying and selling habits of other rich guys. Oh, that's right. A number of people who post in the Patek forum and have multiple Patek watches claim they are not rich :) It is a watch for f. sake! Who cares if they want to flip a watch for a profit?! Oh, poor Mike can't get a 5164 because the other rich man bought it and sold it to another rich man. I am now so sad...

Hahaha. Could have got a 5711 and a 5164 at retail if I so desired. I prefer my 5119J and Vacheron.

I would have said no to a 5711 8 years ago. Today I'll say yes, yes and yes. I've learnt to appreciate the brand.

Ask me many years ago I thought AP was above Patek. Couldnt understand why an AP ROO would be half the price of a 5711/5712.

Well, you guys have got it good over there.

In the UK, there's a new 5164 in steel for sale for the equivalent of $74,000 (on Chrono24) and there were plenty around for not much less not so long ago that were worn and from 2013/2014.

I doubt that these sellers are actually getting these crazy asking prices, they're just trying to make as much money as they possibly can in in the shortest time possible by taking advantage of the perceived immediate market.

I suspect if you offered well below their asking price they'd be interested. It's all nonsense really.

Doesn't put me off the brand, that's even more non-sensical to me. Nothing to do with Patek.

I'm buying my own 5164 in London at retail next month ... hopefully ... and it won't be going anywhere but my wrist.

Oh and OP, you have no problem with 5711 going for 75k and 5712 going for 85k however? It's just the 5164 and it's lower markup than the prior two noted that you have beef with? Gimme a break.

The same people that complain about aquanaut prices now are the ones who turned their nose up at it when it was readily available. It’s just an entry level watch you know. Not good enough for me.

Actual close prices are not the same as asking prices. 5164A recently closes at mid 50s, definitely not over 60k.

Oh, also, as a sidenote, let's not attack fellow TRF'ers for their listing prices. If the market sustains it, it will sell, if it doesn't, it won't. Simple.

Respect and be respected. :)

I've seen lots of people overpay for what they want now with no headache...who are we to criticize? Better than selling it for 50% off!

I agree with the OP. I dont even click on the for sale adds for these watches because it makes me mad.
I really don't know why it irritates me so much. I don't want one and i wouldn't buy one at msrp.
And I will enjoy it when the prices inevitably drop.
Human psychology is odd.

It irritates you because you wish you could buy one at MSRP and have the opportunity to sell it for a huge profit. Envy. There can be no other explanation.

As someone who is irritated by the madness in the market (i.e., bubble), I can genuinely say to you that this is flat out wrong in the 100% sense. Though your statement probably does apply to 95% of people out there.

I can and do get these at MSRP. I wouldn't flip for a huge profit because that would be disrespectful to the relationship and trust I have with my AD. Furthermore, in response to that disrespect, I would lose the trust and thus won't be able to get future ones at MSRP.

We are upset that market forces (whether natural or unnatural) have created an environment that has people focused on absurd values instead of enjoyment of the watches.

At least, that's why I'm not thrilled about the situation. I cannot speak for others.

All these PP/Rolex threads are a little tiresome. Yes, a few are going to make a quick buck. They’re not watch lovers, they’re in it for the money, or to be able to purchase up the chain. There’s many of us watch lovers who’d just like to be able to purchase and wear them at mrsp. But, the balance here is that most of us feel comfortable that by choosing correctly, we can wear different pieces without losing a heap of cash when we tire of it and want a change. In an ideal world, we’d have it both ways. In the real world it doesn’t happen.
As someone said above, a basic SS watch for that money? Not me!!
