The Federal Trade Commission has ruled that oil companies are not gouging customers.
They say, technically, they are screwing customers.

True, but raising gas taxes in the us is akin to political suicide. The early 90s were the last time we saw a tax increase. Currently it's a little over 18 cents a gallon and 24 cents for diesel. I'd be happy to pay six or seven bucks a gallon if it meant that they would fix our crumbling infrastructure.

You're probably right. Right now it seems like everything is political and it's always the other side's fault....

Infrastructure? It's an unknown word in Finland... we got freakin' sand pits for roads over here...

Well, not really, but our roads where primarily built in the 60's and 70's. Not much maintenance. Very little motorways. Our cars is taxed beyond belief. A BMW M5 costs about 175.000 euro. Is that a 70.000 USD car in the US? Fuel, 1.65e/liter. Socialist welfare... There is our (Finlands) problem!

Your right buddy.
My last post got a bit of my view of a very "local" problem I'm having in my country.

As a business owner and politically very very Blue, I adore the US.

$4.17/gal in Carlsbad, CA USA as well......

I bought a Honda Fit to use as a commuter and flipped the BMW 750, kept the Suburban for when I need it, and now get up to 40mpg.

I remember so vividly filling up my 1970 Dodge Challenger, back in the early 70's, when gas was $0.36/gal.....was like $8.00 for a fill up! Of course, the car cost $3000 brand new.......and I made $1.82 and a half cents per hour, working in a grocery store while in school! Oh, and a 4 year degree from UCLA cost less than $2000.00 for the entire 4 years (when you could actually get all your classes in 4, not 5 years like nowadays), and my rent for a studio apartment was $95.00/month......

The "good" of the "good old days".......
