I too can provide law enforcement point of view, the above idea is an excellent way to handle the situation without filing a report. I would not recommend filing a report until you are ready for the investigation to begin ie. don't call the police, file a report and say " well, I don't want anything done yet".

I will however go and see a real estate agent that I have an excellent business relationship with , he was before getting on the property sales bandwagon in spain , a very high up officer of the " mossos esquadra " The Cataluyna police force . Sure he will be able to direct me to the right officer to take charge of this matter if it comes to that .

Over 18? So, are they classed as adults under your state law? I'd be straight to the police, personally. They're sure old enough to take responsibility for their own actions! If they've done nothing wrong, they'll be fine...right?

As for your neighbour, you can talk to him and explain that as a matter of fact your watch has gone missing in suspicious circumstances, and you're going to let the police sort it out.

Again, if his son is innocent, he'll be fine - if he's not, then you should get the opportunity to drop the charges for the sake of your friendship, should you choose to.

One final thought, if your neighbour's son has got himself in with the wrong sort, your neighbour may end up thanking you if the intervention of the police breaks his son's links with them... [and he'll be the best damned dog sitter in the world, if you trust him enough to resume his duties!!]

Just my .

I have my fingers crossed for the safe return of your watch and the maintenance of your friendship with your neighbour...

Really Sorry to hear that Tristan. I have to say I'd go with Paul (Paris) on this one. Get the police involved ASAP especially since they're over 18. If they were younger, OK maybe I would give them a day's time, but you're an adult at 18, you should have some sense of right and wrong by then.

Im truly sickened to hear this. It seems everyone is out for themselves today.

I hate thieves and thievery with a passion. I detest it in fact.

I hope you get your watch back.

This is terrible!
I agree with the others, go straight to the police.
These are not "kids" anymore, they are legally adults...and they KNOW that!
Hope this gets resolved, horrible.
Best of luck, keep us updated!

Just yesterday, my spouse and I decided to buy a safe for our valuables. I like Rolexes and she likes Tiffany diamonds. Right now, they are sitting in a jewelry box and in my drawer. I hope your watch is returned to you very soon.

No, No, No.....It is not the police department's place to be used as "Leverage." We truly hate to be used like this. If you get the police involved they will file charges against the kid regardless of what you say. A felony must be investigated once reported. Then, after the police interview numerous people, they won't be too happy if all of a sudden you don't want anything done. I would give the kid father a chance to get the watch returned, then if that's not done, get the police involved. This is a very hard type of case to investigate unless one of the kids comes clean and actually witnessed someone take the watch. We all know that one of the kids is involved but proving it in court may be an impossible task. Now civil court is different. The burden of proof is much less. That is an option. You may want to find out the upper limit of damages in your state in civil court. If it's only a couple of thousand this may not be an option. Hope things work out for you.

Sorry to hear that Tristan, call the guy and ask him to take care of the dog like usual, and once he's there tell him that your watch is missing and you will have to review your security camera at home to see who took it...paly him and see where does that take you...
ONLY if you're sure he's the only one that could've done this...
Good Luck and keep us updated.

Tristan - I hope everything is going to work out. At least you have a friend who understands and will work with you despite the tense situation. Hopefully one of the "friends" took it without your friend's son knowing about it and will return it. That way, the relationship between you and your friend will have a much better chance of getting back to normal, you will have your watch back and your friend's son will have learned a very valuable lesson on who to trust and not to bring friends into your house without you knowing about it.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you - I hope everything works out. Keep us posted.

If you were paying seperate insurance for the watch, you are covered no matter what. Even if say you left it on the roof of your car, forgot about it, and drove off... it fell off the roof of your car and you never saw it again. If you have been paying for a seperate rider... You will have insurance coverage in the event of ANY theft or mysterious disappearance. If not, your home owners insurance company will limit the theft of jewlery to about 1500 dollars or so; depends on the company, read your policy. Good luck, I became sic to my gut when I read. I really hope everything works out for you.

Theft is theft. Did you give them permission to take/use your watch? If not, then it's criminal, even in Espana. Thereforeinsurance SHOULD pay if you file a claim. If your watch is insured, it's likely insured for LOSS, no matter the method. Good luck!

Tristan, I am speechless. I would GO BESERK if that happened to me. You're entrusting your home to this kid and he has now violated that trust. I think you're being MORE than fair by offering them the chance to return the watch before you proceed with the authorities. Not sure I'd be so 'giving'.

Please let us know what happens. As others have said, what's sad is that relationships will be tarnished because of this. I hope this teaches your son a lesson too.

I am terribly sorry you're having to go through an experience like this. I've been robbed before by an acquaintance, not a friend or son of a friend, but I still felt VERY disrespected and obviously upset about my loss.

We are all sending out good Karma/Thoughts for you - please keep us posted and good luck getting YOUR property back.

Sorry to hear about the situation. HOPEFULLY, the kid will come to his senses and return the watch with an apology for being a jerk!

Could be a time for a good lesson in realities of life and human relations for all involved too.
