So would 'Pigs in a Blanket' qualify as a poor man's Beef Wellington providing the hot dogs were all-beef/kosher?

Doh..... that's me now hungry for sausages and not one "Snorker" in the house.

The nickname "Snorker" originated aboard World War II Royal Navy submarines, ...

I've gone 42 years without ever thinking of whether a hot dog is a sandwich. Until now. Thanks TRF!!

Answer: no, it's not. It's a hot dog (as already said above). ;-)

The Zen philosopher Basho once wrote “a flute with no holes is not a flute; a donut with no hole is a danish”. In this case “a hot dog with a bun is a sandwich; a hot dog with no bun is a hot dog”.

^^^^This pretty much sums it up.

What's next? Is a corn dog a warm popsicle?

Definition of hamburger

1 a : ground beef b : a patty of ground beef (when referring to the meat only)
2 a sandwich consisting of a patty of hamburger in a split typically round bun (when referring to adding bread)

Decades ago, I recall stopping off at a roadside diner (one of those typical truck stop cafes) and the menu offered something called a Hot Dog Sandwich. Being that just about everything listed on the menu came off a griddle, it resembled a grilled cheese sandwich with a sliced frankfurter in the middle and looked something like this. They also offered a fried bologna/baloney sandwich which was somewhat similar in concept. Baloney and frankfurters bear a striking resemblance (taste wise) when prepared in the same manner. Basic white bread is a requisite for the sake of tradition and appearance.

I know Scrapple adopted that saying from the Hog Farmers Assoc. However I never heard it used for Hot Dogs before.

I would say yes as the verb "sandwiched" means to be between two things. Thus, the hot dog being between the buns would be a sandwich.

The 4th Earl of Sandwich would have the final vote here, I'd say, and as it is not fixed in between two traditional forms of bread I would say it is not.

I don't think pizza is a pie either, don't think anyone in the UK does, has to have a top layer of pastry crust for me.

What about meringue? Can it still be a pie if it has a sweet foamy top?

It’s not a sandwich but a more pressing poll question would be if you put ketchup on a hotdog. Personally I don’t and after working in NY for a few years it became apparent that putting ketchup on a hotdog is the most blasphemous act that can be committed on a NY street (and I’ve seen some sketchy stuff).

I'm in Chicago and I order Ketchup, Pickle, Onion. I've been "yelled" at many times by the workers behind the register. "Ketchup???" Don't care, that's how I like it!

Sidenote, there are more than a few places near me that do not even offer the red stuff... They will tell you "Go to Mc Donalds if you want ketchup"

I typically only eat hot dogs at a baseball game (or some other sporting event)...

sauerkraut/mustard... If at a BBQ and hot dogs are floating around while I've been drinking, I will consider a ketchup/mustard mix.

A hot dog is not a sandwich. It's a tube steak.
