I have several pairs of Hoka 7's as I find they reduce back pain.

Like most shoes, they are stupidly overpriced and I always feel ridiculous when I buy a new pair, but as they do seem to help with back pain I accept the ripoff pricing.

Mostly Sperry boat shoes, Clark’s chukkas, Asics Onitsuka Tigers, or New Balance 515. Thinking about picking up a pair of Chuck 70s.

Owned probably 10 pairs of these but they have very little as far as cushion goes. Wearing them longer than 3-4 hours got painfull. This is Buford(RIP good boi) using my Vans as pillows.

Agree on the New Balance. I don't care if they are called "Dad Shoes". They are the only sneakers I can take right out of the box, put them on, and wear them all day with 0 pain or a "breaking in period."

After I bought my first pair, I went and bought 2 more pair of the same kind worried they would get discontinued.

Saucony Tempus and Brooks Adrenaline GTS for running and other activities. AJ1s and Vans for casual wear.

I really want some New Balance 990’s, not for exercising but as a casual shoe, but I look terrible in them. The only sneaker I wear is a navy blue Vans Authentic plimsoll.

I do that with a number of things, but generally with Merrill’s as I usually pick them up when on sale. This year the Moab 2s where replaced by the Moab 3s so I picked up a few Moab 2s heavily discounted and should last me a few years.

I was actually wondering “what sneakers Dan wears”, given your love of dress shoes. Those Moab 2s look like excellent hiking shoes, which is something I need. Might see what I can find in-store.

Once you get your size in the store generally you’re able to find them for less online. Usually as I mentioned I buy them when they are on sale on the merrell website. I think they typically give you like 20% off for your first order but there’s a number of times I’ve purchased mine for much less.

So .. Nail on the head!!! Good call! There in lies the peril of collecting. I actually wear all mine. Which is good and bad. With so many you hardly “wear” any of them. So they don’t degrade as quickly if you had to sell them, they would still be considered NDS.

Yah the build part is the problem. The materials have gotten cheaper with time (like everything) from full grain leathers to a laminate. The shoes don’t even smell like leather anymore they smell like plastic and adhesives. Foam on the mid soles degrades the quickest. AM90’s are the worst because the flex of the foam on the heels cracks the paint and then it starts to fall off. Most midsoles start to discolor (white to yellow) .Midsole glues get almost crystalline and become very brittle. The midsoles will separate from the uppers under normal wear. So useless for actual intended use.

I started “collecting” in the early 90’s but gave it up. I had a prize pair of Nike FC’s that I loved. I took them out of the box put em on went out. Only to find the midsole had separated from the upper while wearing. I had worn that pair maybe 5 times. That pair was new in 2005. I started to notice some discoloured pairs in my collection that were even younger in age. They had always been stored in a climate controlled environment with shoe trees in each pair ( to keep shape and prevent moisture issues). Lots of collectors keep them in vacuum sealed plastic and some even use argon bubbles. Vacuum sealing sometimes mis shapes the shoes depending how it’s done which over time becomes permanent. Argon is just pricey and you’re probably only gonna do it once, so you’re never wearing them.
Not to mention if you’re selling you need to keep the boxes too which takes up a ton of space. Everyone jokes that my basement looks like a footlocker back room with all the shelves and boxes.

Thanks for the tip, Dan. It’s warming up over here so I am keen to get out and do some bushwalking, but not in the aforementioned Vans!

Thanks for taking the time to reply—this stuff is genuinely interesting to me.

My wife’s cousin has a similar looking collection that takes up an entire spare room organised in custom shelving, and when we lasted visited them interstate, he mentioned the problem of many of the shoes beginning to degrade. What a shame! Still, once they do deteriorate beyond practical wear (but not aesthetics aside from some discolouration), I think they can be appreciated as art objects.

It’s cool that you wear the ones you can.

I would like a pair of Jordans but I dress like a preppy, and alas—much like the grey New Balance (love the connection they have to both straightedge hardcore punk and dad-core Steve Jobs, btw)—they just don’t suit me. I like them though.

If you hurry you still might be able to get a Moab 2 in your size. These are being phased out for a significant amount less than the Moab 3s. The only difference from the two from what I was able to tell is that the Moab 3s use reusable materials.

Hey man those are great questions and completely on point.

You could wear Jordan’s!!! You’d be suprised too at how many people will give you props!
I’m a fan of NB as well but their lasts are “just” off my foot shape. Which has been destroyed by years of boardsports so I can’t fairly comment I guess?

I’ve never heard that before “dad -core” that’s amazing!!! Thanks for that! I do refer to a few pairs as “dad shoes” or Cinder Blocks but Dad Core fantastic!

New Balance & Adidas Ultraboost. I recently received a pair of custom Nike running shoes from a friend with my name sewn into the back tab. They’ve gotten lots of comments.
