Daytona PM - everyday watch?

Thanks guys, appreciate your opinions. The weight doesn't bother me, it's not that heavy. Maybe I'm concerned about the bezel and the scratches on it a little, scratches on the bracelet doesn't bother me either.

I think I will wait to see if Rolex introduces anything new with the Daytona line this year, otherwise I will pull a trigger :)

I would wear pm daily. The new SS models have such a perfect mirror finish they scratch just looking at them as well.

I just picked up a blue dial Daytona and I fully intend for it to be a daily. Being white gold helps as most people don’t know it’s gold.

Not all PMs are the same; although there is some metal removal with Pt it is much less than gold. The other issue with PM watches with PM bezels is that the bezels quickly develop micro scratches that show up in bright lighting. This is one reason I prefer the OF ones with ceramic bezels.

I believe this scratches are "the same" on DD and DJ bezels, right?

I own the platinum and wg OF. The OF is easily a daily driver for anyone. I use the platinum on weekends or special occasions. The weight does not bother me.

I wear that exact white gold Daytona or another white gold piece most days of the week. Sure if you look closely you can see surface markings, but I prefer the feel of white gold myself. Weight is a nonissue. The bezel holds up well (at least for me) since it is relatively "flat." If you have any doubts, though, I'd keep the 40k until you are sure. Personally I would not want to put something away and just gaze at it from time to time.

I wear a YG probably a solid 5 -6 months a year and love it. No issues, you know what you're getting.

I don't have a Daytona, but I have a WG Sub which is my only/daily watch. Sure it scratches waaaaaaay easier than my old steel Subs, but that's obvious. Just part of the compromise of owning a soft metal watch. I don't wear it or treat it any differently. If I did, I wouldn't want to own it. Doesn't bother me and I'll never go back to a steel Sub.

I have owned my 116509 since 2015. I wear it nearly daily and imo it doesn’t scratch any more or less than SS , but it does take and show a ding much easier than SS.

Yea its heavy but its a non issue and is actually a positive as it feels very special. People have worn DD's their entire lives and enjoyed them. Even badly scratches ones still look fantastic. I happen to think that whatever is going to scratch PM will most likely leave a mark on SS too.

I got some goosebumps looking at the OF photo. What a great shot.

OP - for me the metal bezel would annoy me to no end after it gets scratched. Had this issue with the 116520 steel watches too. Personally, I'd try to go PM but get a ceramic bezel. Game change on the daytona.

I like the OF version of that model, for an everyday wearer, but that's me. You just can't go wrong with either.

Thanks for your opinions. I still have one question… If you have the option to add it to your collection then sure but what about if you will have to trade GMT and DJ41 + cash for WG Daytona? Would you rather have GMT and DJ41 or would you do the trade?

I have Daytona WG Blue Dial and I wear it daily. Thats the beauty of WG, not too flashy.

That is a lovely watch, but the metal bezel is a scratch/ding magnet even in SS, so even worse in gold, but using daily depends on how you wear your watches and how much you care about perfection. If I was gong to do that, I’d get one per-loved so you don’t wince at every dent/ding/scratch.

This is so true. All my Daytonas have a ceramic bezel save my TT white dial that my wife gave me on our wedding day. Love the watch but the bezel is a scratch magnet.

Otherwise the weight and scratch magnet would potentially take away from enjoying the watch.

And no; I wouldn’t trade a DJ41 and GMT for a Daytona. It’s two versatile and different watches for one.

Sure, PM is heavier, but it's not like 50 lbs strapped to your wrist. The weight as a reason not to wear one daily is laughable. I don't understand it.

I don't notice the weight until I pick up a stainless piece. I tried on a steel Daytona the other week (for fun cause it was there) and when I picked it up I almost chucked it across the store. I have gotten so used to picking up my Sub. On the wrist, my Sub disappears like every other Sub I have owned. Any generation, any material...SS or TT.

regarding the weight of PM vs. SS, I dont think anyone would consider the extra 100g of a gold watch a physical encumbrance. However, if you like to wear a watch in place above the wrist bone and have it stay there even when your arm is hanging down in a relaxed position at your side, gravity will pull a PM watch down towards your hand unless the bracelet is tight enough to leave a mark on your skin when you take the watch off, whereas with steel and titanium, a watch is more likely to hang above the wrist bone without a super tight bracelet. If you like to wear a bracelet loose and have the watch hang down towards your hand, PM vs SS weight is a non issue.
