So, how does it work in the US where you have to pre-pay? If you want to fill your tank, do you pay more than expected, and go back for change after? Honest question.

Yes, big pain...not sure how much $$ its going to cost to fill up,wait in line, give them above the amount(guess)...fill, invariably too much $$, go back inside wait in line again...get change
Thieves make everyone's lives a little more miserable

Can't happen here in NJ as its a no self service at the pump state. Unless you deliberately take off with out paying.

In Thailand there's petrol station attendants like there were in Oz in the old days, so there's no chance of forgetting to pay. But!, you should still get out of your car to check the meter is set to zero before they start pumping!. More than once (before I wised up to the rort ) I noticed it cost a lot more to fill the tank than expected, sometimes they don't re-set it after the last car has got fuel!!.

In the UK, in most cases one gets the option to pay at the pump or at the station, as far as I know, petrol theft from drive offs isn't a big problem.

I've spend 26 years as a police officer and my more 'junior' years I dealt with dozens of 'drive offs'. The vast majority are by people who do so by mistake (distracted by the kids etc).

The law here requires mens rea - guilty mind - or the 'intent to permanently deprive' and if you are lacking this, then no criminal offense, but merely a civil debt...

Cheers, Ian

Good outcome mate...

I had an interesting one the other day where I attended the gas station without my wallet, in just track pants and unshaved...but armed with my fuel card...filled up the tank and then the fuel card didn't work...doh!

Station attendant wasn't impressed, locked the door and didn't want to let me leave demanding that I paid.

Told him that he had my rego, gave him my business card and stated that it wasn't my fault that one of their brand fuel cards wasn't working. But he started to get abusive and 'heavy' with me..

He then called out some other bloke from the rear of the office...who fortunately was far more reasonable...

Turned out that there was problem with the card with Shell and not my fault...
