Don't sleep on the M40 version of the X3. It is quick and makes a great daily. With a JB4, it'll rip. A lot of the reviews I have seen make it hard to justify the spread between the X3M and the X3 M40.

I had the same dilemma through the AMG lineup, and am happy with the decision to take the 43 for daily duties.

If you want any more performance, you are better off with a stand-alone performance car.

I have been driving a regular X3 with the M trim since 2014 and I am still in love with it. Started thinking of buying a new car though, either a new X3, X5, or Porsche Cayenne...

I may (or may not have been) the OP. I ended up buying the M4CS instead of the X3M as it leased much better. I was getting $1200/mo quotes for the X3M Competition with an $84k MSRP and with discounts and incentives off MSRP my $125k M4CS leased for under $800/mo. $0.00 out of pocket. It was a no brainer as the M4CS is a wild ride and San Marino Blue with all the carbon fiber is amazing.

I really like my X3 35i; it's a great car. The 35i is a great engine (N55); can't imagine how it would perform with 500 horses. While down on the Keys this past week I wanted to rent one but Enterprise did a bait and switch giving me a GLC300 instead. I found the Mercedes really uncomfortable to get in and out of. I'm only 5'8" and had to do contortions to get into the car. Had to buy an adapter for my iPhone to get the Apple Play system to work. I missed the heads-up display and the familiarity of the well thought out ConnectedDrive system.

Nice! I have heads up display on my X3 and it is really convenient. It is something you don't know you kind of need it, until you experience it. When I drive another car that does not have it, feels really weird.

I agree totally; after driving the GLC300 and getting back into the X3, it took me a moment to realize it was there. Then there was a sigh of comfort to be back.

Or go Italian w a Stelio Quadrifoglio... way more character and more of a drivers “car”. Of course some of the personality is Italian build quality lol. I love mine

Congrats I almost pulled the trigger on an X3MC after I found out its cargo area can hold both my dog crates with the rear seats down unlike the glc 63, jaguar svr, and alfa quadrifogliowhich have little cargo space. I held off just so I can compare it to the X5M since it will be released very soon .

Is the X3M competition a comfortable daily driver or a little ‘overkill’?

In that context it’s hard to say it’s not overkill. If you want a comfortable driver I’d get an x5 and call it a day. If you want a slightly raised m3 well you know!

Congrats! Every time i drive the wife's X1 it is such a blast to drive! Great balance in the twisties, and enough engine to have PLENTY of fun without going too extreme.

Enjoy!

PS: Have a Dinan Stage 4 modded M-spec 435i / 704 suspension. True sleeper car with plenty of power and grip.

An M40 is a better daily.

I'm between this and the X5. The X5 definitely has nicer redesigned interior and the X3MX or X3 M40i both looks like my current 540xi inside. Granted not drastically different, some update and change is nice.
