Getting ready to buy my daughter one for a first car. I am a huge fan and have several friends who own them and they are great long term vehicles.

I've got a 2016 Trail Edition in white, 57,000 miles and counting. I plan on giving it to my son in 6 years when he turns 16.

Hmmm . . . got me wanting to check out a 4Runner!

What's the average gas milage?

Is there a particular year model that really shined?

Stock - 18 - 20ish mixed use.

I was down to 15-16 in town with 275 e-rated ATs.

At the time, I was commuting 60mi a day for work. at the 3 year mark, I was just shy of 50k miles. So....off it went.

We’ve had a couple of them, but I don’t care for the new body style and they’ve gotten rather pricey. Plus it won’t tow my 3500 lbs. tractor. Enter a Jeep Grand Cherokee with V6 (300 hp) that will fairly easily do the towing and average 24 mpg when not towing. It has been completely trouble free and holding up really well after 42,000 miles. I’m still not a Chrysler/Dodge fan, but this Jeep has been good.

4Runners aren't known for great towing capacity but the new ones are rated for 5000lbs and the older V8's are up to 7300lbs.

I had 97 2 wheel drive model SR I bought used with 32k miles and made the mistake of selling it in 2004. In truth I like the looks of the older ones better than the new ones
Id love to find a low mileage one from 20 years ago.

That is the 3rd generation of 4Runners and considered by many enthusiasts to be the best of the lot. I think they are the best looking of them all but it's difficult to find a lower mileage one these days in good condition and they can bring more than people would expect. They are prone to rust but since you are down south that shouldn't be a problem and the fact that there are still so many on the road is a testament to their durability.

My wife’s 2004 Limited was problematic. The 4wheel linked suspension required a $2,500 repair at 60k and then the freehub system developed problems engaging and that was another $2,000 shortly thereafter. Since she did not do any off-roading (this may have contributed to the freehub issue), we traded it for an MDX with even more damn problems.

Hers was the V8 model and that was a hell of a good engine.

I would not hesitate buying one now however as they have ironed out the 4 wheel linked suspension issues. Just make sure you use it for its intended purpose from time to time.

My brother in law has an 99 and my sister in law has an 07. When I replace the dreaded Taurus X I plan to grab either a 4Runner or a Tacoma.

This was my 1985 Toyota 4Runner, sold it just a few years ago. Was in the family since 1987 (bought from a coworker).

I drove my 2006 4Runner, bought new, for 12 years. Never a problem, only performed routine maintenance and new tires. Sold it and bought a 2015 BMW. When I traded the 4Runner for the Bimmer I was surprised by the generous allowance I received.

Beautiful

I’ve been watching this series about an Expedition with Toyotas including a TRD 4Runner that did an overland journey from Cartagena to Ushuaia

If you’re into serious trekking you might enjoy it

4Runner's are great vehicles!

I sold a 2017 TRD Pro 4 Runner in September of last year. I really loved that truck, but was given an offer I couldn't refuse.

It was lifted on King's with 285 BGF KO2's, hidden winch, sliders, baja fogs. Paid $46k for it brand new, put $6K into it in extras and then sold with 50,000 miles for $43k.

Not many trucks will hold their value that well imo.

With gas prices coming back to reality I'm thinking about scratching that itch again :-)

Drove a 2006 for 12 years. Bought new at the time. Never a problem. Followed scheduled maintenance as recommended. When I traded it, for a BMW, the old girl held her value. My off roading is nil, so the BMW suits me fine. Would I recommend a 4 Runner, based on my experience, yes.

I bought my wife a 2013 Four Runner, its comfortable but a little underpowered. Its probably for the best because the wife has a lead foot. I drive a 2010 Tundra and me son a 2006 Tacoma.

If they had more power I’d be all over them. The rear window by itself is almost worth buying one. BUT that engine has less pep than a corolla. It’s why I have a GX

I absolutely love my 98 3rd gen pre-facelift T4R. I have made a personal commitment to do all of the wrenching and my goal is to join the 400,000 mile club.
