I was messing about with the kids in the garden, I was rugby tackled by my 4 year old son in a paddling poole (i am not joking) the watch went under water a few times max depth 20 cm's. Didnt think anything of it, later that day the mist appeared on the inside and the rest is history. I will post some pics on the damage tonight.
I have spoken to Rolex RSC in Kent) The watch is going in for an overhaul, it looks like I will be stuck with a service dial initially although they will check their inventory for any Red Dials they may have in stores.
I explained to the lady on the phone what happened and she finished my sentence by stating "the dial has lifted and flaked when the watch was dried out?" so it is a known issue. I want this episode to be a warning to us all on how easy this can happen.
Anyway, I will attempt some pics to give you all nightmares later.

Paul

That's great to hear Jason, thought they no longer give a red font red sub service replacement. But at that price I guess he's better off looking for a original dial.

How come these dials are available? I can't imagine people taking it from an original watch just to sell or were there a lot more available (through RSC)?

Any pics Paul??

I've seen water damaged vintage dials that had some visible staining but this damage seems excessive. How warm was the drying cupboard ?

Sorry to hear this mate.

the dial has cracked in to several sections and lifted, as to the temp, I will put a thermometer in the drying cupboard for an hour later to get an idea on temp. Pics will be taken tonight.
Depending how the costings come back, I think a std white service dial will make more sense if the price is going to be nearer £2.5K for a Luminova Service dial. Then I will take my time searching for a nice genuine Red Dial.
I am not sure if there is a market for Red Service Dials in Luminova, I dont think I have seen one for sale.

Was the crown fully tight?
It's hard to make a sub ingest water. If it's able to do so easily it's been ingesting air and dust for some time.

I fear the latter, I was just speaking with Gabriel (our own TRF Deadwood expert) a few weeks back about putting it in for an overhaul.
Right, off to read my son a bedtime story and I will post some pics that will make everyone wince.

Except for the crack, the dial does not look that bad, I expected more damage per your description. I would call Bob Ridley and send him pictures of the dial as he does great work and might be able to restore your dial if you want.

I had some same story with a Datejust, when the crown was left open and then a baby was bathed, but there were flakes and a few bubbles. This Sub is a total disaster. Sorry to see it, but still how did the water enter ? As you described the incident, nothing was out of the everyday life of all of us, and with summer at its full, water of 20 cm is around our watches many times every day. Wishing you all the best !

Oh my god!!! Paul, that's horrible ! I know how much this watch mean to you and I feel so sorry this happened to you my friend!
Good to hear you will get it serviced as soon as possible, I do think it's really essential if you want it to survive. And then...the dial...
You better take your time to find an original one for that (1972) series.
It will be an expensive fix, but I am sure it will be worth it in the end.

Contact Bob Ridley - He should be able to help you with everything you need I would think...

EDIT: Didn't see you're in the UK when posting above. You could still contact him though...

Hmm that's not good.

Rolex will replace it with a luminova service dial for under $450. Doesn't include other service costs though.
If you ever tried to flip it though you'd take a big hit. Very hard to sell.

Any Service Dial would be a stop gap. The watch is my birth year sub so flipping is not on the agenda I plan for it to go to my Son in years to come, plenty of others available for flipping

In that case I'd be getting quotes and advice from the restoration experts. A couple of good ones have already been mentioned above.
Take your time and shop around. But don't expect miracles.

Good luck!

I reckon only a replacement original red sub dial will help ease the pain of this experience. OP, you could try mending this dial with the suggested restorers till you find a replacement! Think dial mending is cheap.

So sorry this happened. I bet the dial can be saved with a skilled watchmaker.

A well maintained Sub must be capable of surviving rain.

I use mine in all water activities, but check it two three times per year.

I take the calculated risk, but well know that all seals and crystal are in shape. No safe box for my watch. Water use and small dives to 12-15 m.

Mate!! have not been on TRF for a few days and couldn't believe it when I saw this thread. Absolutely gutted beyond belief for you .
That was one hell of an adverse reaction to the moisture ingression.
Hope it all works out for you in the end.

Good luck

Paul, I have just seen your post.

I cannot even start to imagine how you must have felt when you first saw it.

But hopefully with the right help & time, a nice genuine replacement dial can be sourced.

Good luck.
