I'm an ER doctor, and we often get dirty. It can be oil, dirt, beer, gasoline, blood, emesis, poop or any other generally disgusting body fluid. I need a watch that can be washed vigorously. I also scuba dive, and though I have a nice dive computer, I use my dive watches to time safety stops. While a dive computer can malfunction, for all practical purposes, a Rolex Submariner or Sea Dweller will not. So, I have four dive watches, with a Datejust and Daytona for dressier occasions (which for me are few and far between. If you see me in a suit, it's highly likely that someone has died or is getting married.)

There is a lot of truth in that . Even where our company is originally English it is now owned by a large french group . I therefor spend most of my time in the London or Paris main office . If you think that people in the UK have this chip on their shoulder about wearing expensive watches or driving flashy cars .... try France .
They really have a problem towards making or having money in that country .
Imagine that the French government is considering to limit the earnings and bonus' of the top managers there .
Try to introduce that in the UK , let alone in the US !

I'm in the elevator business. Wearing jeans one day and dressed up the next. I was looking for a watch that was versatile and the sub fit the bill. Seems to go with any situation.

Was VP Sales, now semi-retired. Needed a watch with two timezones and date. Now require a watch which is supremely comfortable easy to read and can take an outdoor lifestyle in the north of Canada. After 5 tries at Rolex I settled with the Explorer II. As far as what other people think - I rarely ever see anyone here in Canada wearing a Rolex - at lease in the northern prairie region. I expect you would see more in Vancouver or Toronto...so what others think never played into my decision to invest in nice timepieces...

When not deployed I wear a sports or semi-dress and dress watches at the office. When deployed like I am now, I wear a sports model (DS, SMP GMT) and also bring along a Suunto and a Casio Pathfinder.

I teach private beginner swim lessons to adults as well as coach water polo.
As I've said in previous posts, I wear my Sub 24/7. It is a tool watch relative to what I do.

I am a geotechnical engineer and run a branch office for a large engineering firm. I have owned a blue TT sub, SS Yacht master, and SD. Sadly, I do not have any of these anymore. I currently wear a Breitling and hope to have a Datejust by the end of the month.

I guess some of us pick a watch based on what we'd like to fill our days with, rather than what we actually do for a living.

I spend my days doing this...

and this...

But what I'd really like to be doing full-time is this...

Hence...:

Engineers/IT folks - digital watches, if they wear watches at all. Many use their I Phones to keep time.

Salespeople - Rolexes.

+1

Retired Army (GMT II), Cop (SD). Not a diver, but have always treated my watches very rough. I like knowing I can get them wet, muddy, and bang them around without worrying about them breaking.

Aint it the truth. You'd think engineers and technical people would have more appreciation for the machine inside but in my office they all wear drab quartz watches or plastic digital.

Must vary by location or industry or something. The only people I know who wear Rolex are engineers.

Engineer here, but I have both. Gotta love the Gshock and go ahead and flame, but the Citizen eco (skyhawk for me) is pretty interesting- plus it always has the exact time (Radio calibrated.)

Computer IT for a very large bank. I work around people working all kinds of different jobs for the bank. It's all random. Almost all are cheap brands and models. My VP wears a Rado. I've only seen 2 Rolex and 1 Panerai at work. Far as I've seen and know I have the largest collection of expensive watches. Not cause they can't afford to just they don't care. Most are family oriented and spend their extra money on different things.

Although the appreciation for watches (and Rolex), certinaly crosses different walks of life and trades, It's is pretty logical and safe to assume that the majority of the Rolex owners, are those who have jobs that can afford. And then some owners (not me) are just idependantly wealthy. I'm also assuming that most people who can't afford would first choose a car before a Rolex.

To break things down even more...I would imagine if you took 100 teachers and 100 laywers, we'll probably find more Rolex's amougnst the laywers versus the teachers.

I'm a Cisco Network Engineer/Architect (CCIE). I travel all over for my job as a consultant for companies of all shapes, sizes, and industries, and enjoy wearing a nice watch. My customers are all in IT, and I find it the norm for most of them to have no interest or understanding for a nice watch. It is very very rare that I meet someone who has an appreciation for a Rolex. Most of them spend money keeping up with the latest phones, and usually drive more expensive cars then me. Everyone is into sometihng different.
