-Is "fat font insert" a reference to the date wheel? I kinda gather that might be the case (I saw a dissemination of dates with "open" 6s & 9s elsewhere on the forum, and on this GMT the 6 & 9 are not open).
Generally speaking if the patina/aging on the hands does not match the hour imdices then they are probably service replacements. Older service replacement hands will show age, just not as much as the rest of the dial.

More curious is that your dial has a date wheel where the "6" and "9" are not "open". I may be wrong but I thought that a 1675 should alway have "open" 6's and 9's??? I think your date wheel should also be silver too....

Absolutely beautiful watch all the same....congrats

Yeah I'm admittedly clueless about the watch (hence the reason I lurked then registered here). My old man showed it to me when I was probably 14 or 15, and I didn't see it again until I had to dig around at my parent's house after he died late last year. It was stashed back in the box in a remote chest of drawers in a really cluttered office room of his. Along with all of the paperwork he had an index card where he wrote that it was received "14 Mar 67 from USS Independence CVA-62" and "serviced 9 Oct 1975 $48.50". Maybe the hands were replaced at that service? Would be unlike my old man to have altered the originality of the GMT, but who knows.

Since today's the 26th, opportune time to check the date, and indeed the '6' is closed- basically a standard-looking numeral.

As I've stated, I really am a neophyte to this stuff and the terminology, but trying to quickly learn. Silver date wheel is something I need to figure out. Hell, yesterday I googled "lugs" to figure out what those are! Sorry if I seem so dumb about it all.

Again, appreciate the earnest replies and knowledge from all here. Many thanks!

Hey, it's an awesome looking GMT and given its provenance .....a true heirloom to treasure and enjoy.

I was only pointing out, with my own limited knowledge, some of the things that were probably done at that 1975 service when no one had any idea to preserve the originality of the watch, they only wated to keep it running well...

Cheers!!!

I'm starting to try to read up on movements. Kind of technical for my brain.

Quick question: would the movement on a GMT from this timeframe be a 1575?

Great watch. Congratulations.
Wouldn't worry about wearing it around. I wear my Rolex watches and my Breitling with no worries in some dicey areas. You just need to be aware, as one should be no matter what.

So far as TSA, used to put it in my briefcase, but now I keep my watch on. My last trip was through Sea-Tac last month. The agent searching me put his finger between the case and my wrist. Most likely to see if I had something secured there. With an implanted defibrillator and titanium left leg, I always get that VIP Grope from TSA ;)

Well, these items regarding being concerned about sporting your watch safely and TSA have been covered and are searchable. I digressed.
My intent was to congratulate you on your nice watch and welcome you aboard the forum.

Wear your watch with pride.

Hey if the Hobbits approve, no worries, then!

Thanks for ALL the replies. It's been an education and really fun learning what I have so far. Way more to the whole thing than I could have ever envisioned, that's for sure. Love this GMT and really look forward to future Rolexes!

Experts please chime in if I'm wrong:
Oddly, the "26" is with closed "6". The others (6, 9, 16, 19, 29) should be "open" digits 6 and 9.
Looks like the "6" in your first pic shows a closed "6" ..
And background on the date wheel should be silver AFAIK.
Nonetheless, a real stunner
