Spend a little more. Go new, for his first.

DavidSW will give you a deal far lower than used at an AD, and it'll be new.

as for models, go hulk! grrrrrr!
I agree, just purchased from DavidSW, due here on Monday - will post up pic's later (my very first after several months worth of research).

Tourneau is a decent place to window shop, and I'm always treated well at the shops in Houston or Dallas. They can have a nice selection of watches from several brands, so it's a good place to compare and look. If you don't really know what you're doing, you can get some idea of pricing and what your budget will get you by searching ebay. Once you have some idea what to buy, there are excellent sellers hanging around this forum who can help.

I was in wempe Bond st today and not impressed, the sales guy didnt know the references and was hardly paying any attention to me, unlike Selfridges, Marcus and Rolex boutique where everyone was very friendly and fun.

I'm also from NYC & I would not buy a rolex anywhere but right here from one of the trusted sellers. There a quite a few who's reputation are impeccable. I for one have done business with Tony Geha( Justrolexes) but would not hesitate to buy from DavidSW or Oscar(Bodybump) just to name a few.

+1 on this. Keep asking your questions and we'll try to provide you with answers. Any of the watches that your husband are interested in would make a great first Rolex. My vote would be for the classic Sub unless he's a dress up every day kind of guy then maybe the datejust. No one has asked yet but what is the size of his wrist? The different models wear differently on the wrist.
Let him in on this forum and his head will be swimming for a bit but it's a great place for your - his Rolex education. Great bunch here on TRF, welcome.

missuscastro,
The members speak the truth here. Check out The For Sale Forum here. You'll find JUSTROLEXES, David, Kanger and a few others that will blow away buying at an AD. I've bought 8 from here, not one problem.
Best of luck, good for you not shopping too. LOL

EDIT: get em a Submariner !!

1. I'm surprising him with a budget ($4500) for a Rolex, and he has been looking into getting a used one. He's wanted both a new and a used one, and I had told him that I'll get him a brand new one later in life (and also much richer.... hopefully :p).

2. His preferred models are: Date Just, Submariner & Air King.

3. He wants a steel watch with no ridges/diamonds on the face. He also prefers a dark face.

Just a note, he's only been looking at things, he isn't a part of this forum yet (he's been saying he's wanted to join). He never SERIOUSLY started to look into it because he thought that he would get his first Rolex way way later on in life, so he only knows slightly more than I do about getting a pre-owned watch.

You might want to consider a 36mm explorer 1. It's in your budget and a great all around watch. Search model #114270 in the for sale section.

I think the best watch is find someone that will part with an old Non Date Submariner 5513 in the $4500 range. This is from what I have seen the real enthusiast watch. I buy my watches most of the time spotting them on people walking. I say hey sell me that for X amount, sometimes they say yes. I also trade from time to time. Currently I own my prized 1665 Sea Dweller. I traded heavy for that one. The other is a 1991 Datejust 16220 with box and papers. The watch was presented for 25 years working at IBM. I aquired it one day at work saw a man wearing it I said I will give you $1200. He said hmm let me think about it. I gave him my card he called me few hours later met the next day and swapped cash for watch. The datejust has become my wife's daily watch.

He likes the DateJust, submariner and the Air King.
Good on you, it is something he will always cherish because you worked hard to make it a reality. My choice would be a Submariner as they are built
like a tank!

Here is a link to a NIB Air King w/ a blue dial here on the forum - it's under your budget; although I;m not familiar with the seller.

Personally I'd look for a nice GMT used in that price range. I agree with the folks suggesting a trusted seller here. Today I advised my wife to do the same for her next watch, a meteorite Daytona.

Also, because I showed him this thread, he's already shopping for his next watch, most likely a Sub :)
