That's very kind of you, thankyou.

I believe the watch is a genuine mil sub 5513 with genuine dial and case-back, though it would not be possible to know if the case-back correctly belonged on that watch without inspecting it. The hands and bezel were clearly civilian parts and not original as they should have been. The fixed bars also appear to have been removed so that a bracelet could be fitted.

At best, a correct mil-sub case and matching back with good T-dial but missing hands and bezel, and having had its fixed bars irreversibly excised, is £15-20k of watch as others have said, and no more.

I cannot wholly condemn the BBC man. His knowledge was clearly patchy or ill-advised, but the watch was at least identified as a rare military piece and it should set the charming owner on the right course if he chooses to sell it, albeit that he may be slightly disappointed to find the valuation over-optimistic. I would rather he think he had £35,000 and be slightly disappointed to receive £17,500, than that he should receive £5,000 from a sharp dealer and think he had done brilliantly, in ignorance.

With kind regards,

Haywood M

Hello Haywood, I found the blog from Bobs watches and posted on the forum in hope of a response from the other more knowledgeable members than myself. When a colleague at work told me about the programme I said to him that the hands, bezel markers, bracelet etc sounded wrong but obviously there is conflicting information about so any clarification would be very interesting.( I am not by any stretch of the imagination an expert on this subject)

Look forward to (hopefully) hearing more on the subject from you.

Regards

Chris

there is a link to the programme on the first page of the blog. I've learned so much. It turns out that it could be original, just been 'civilianised' (is that a word?). I think the general feeling is that you would want to have the piece in your hand to match the numbers engraved on caseback etc
